Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Definitely worth a visit. We stumbled across this by chance and had a fascinating informative talk by one of the owners, David - on sustainable fish leather!
We learnt so much about the process involved. David is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about his craft.

Who would have thought that fish skins could be put to use as leather products?
I was really fascinated that a product which would otherwise be waste material could be put to a functional use.
Worthwhile educational visit and so pleased that we took the time to go.
Wonderful product and it's use is really only limited by your imagination.

A great educational experience, with quality good for sale. I found the owner and his knowledge very interesting. You get to hear and see how fish leather is made and get to feel and see tanned skins. Fish leather is such and amazing product and it makes a lovely product when turned in wallet, bags and shoes. Well worth a visit.

Enjoyable, informative time spent at this interesting shop/workshop. Having just moved to Esperance I was keen to find out about this little place having seen reviews about. It was exactly as it’s described below. A passionate owner talked about his product, there was a television presentation about it all and some lovely products to buy. It’s such a pity it’s so far off the main area of shops though. I’m wonder why it can’t be set up nearer the beach, with a glassed off ‘viewing area’ whilst he is working, alongside a shop to browse around. I’ve seen some great chocolate factories work like this and they are really good. I think far more people would be lucky enough to find it then. But overall definitely worth a trip ….if you can find it!

This family-inspired and run business is well worth checking out. The owner shows videos of how the business came to be and what the process is to actually create fish leather! He is very engaging to listen to and is passionate about his craft! I wish I could have seen an item from his 'shop' to purchase but it wasn't my style. I did buy a piece of leather to take back to show my school students. Free to visit but check out his opening hours as there is a closed time around midday.

We were on a tight time schedule as we had to get back on board a cruise ship before it departed and left us behind, so weren't able to take the time to watch the free video detailing all that is involved in producing the amazing fish leather from what would normally be waste product. However, the owner went over and above to give us a quick run down on the processes involved to achieve the end product. It was very interesting and informative. Well worth a visit and if you want a special gift for someone then you may find in the on-site Mermaid Leather shop.

I travel a lot and it's rare that I find something exciting to share. Mermaid Leather is a great Aussie innovation in Esperance - that has been established on stuff people throw away. They make leather out of fish skin, recycled from commercial fisheries. I love my fish scale earrings. Go and pay a visit, and support such a unique operation. The staff were brilliant, passionate and very friendly - they take all the time to talk to customers about their product, how its made, and the likes. Well done guys.

What a fabulous and unique place to visit. Who would have thought that fish skins could be tanned! Welcomed so nicely by owner who was so glad that we came and he went through the process of how fish skins are turned into leather. It was fascinating! We felt tanned skins which felt just like leather, skins from barramundi, white pointer sharks, all sorts of fish skins. We watched a short video which went through the whole process , it was riveting. Of course there was produce for sale, like wallets, purses etc but no pressure to purchase anything. A must do when visiting Esperance. There are only six places in the world who go through this process and he is the only one in Australia.

An eye opener to what innovated people can do. All credit to this business which turns the scales and skins of sharks, stingrays and fish into works of art, be it useful or decorative. A visit to this factory, or the town craft market shop near the Information Centre is a must for visitors in the Esperance region. In each place we were able to converse freely with highly passionate and dedicated craftspeople. We came away richer for the experience. We appreciate that we now have a few mementos that are unique and useful and are value for money in the true sense. Thank you Mermaid Leather.

My husband, myself & my two kids stumbled upon Mermaid Leather on Sunday afternoon just gone. It was such a rainy day that it was somewhere to get out of the rain for a bit. We were welcomed by a lovely man there who told us all about Mermaid Leather, what it does, how etc. He was brilliant & so informative. My son who is big into marine life & hoping to be a marine biologist was so impressed! I just wanted to thank him for giving us his time & for such an enjoyable visit to your gem of a place. We will be back in the near future & we will gladly recommend this place to anyone to know heading to Esperance! Thank you again! Jill
