About
The Copper Coast offers the ultimate for the visitor to the area, with its unspoilt coastlines, pristine waters, safe swimming beaches and great fishing. With a population of 15,000 people the Copper Coast, located at the top of the Yorke Peninsula, comprises of the main towns of Kadina, Moonta, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Wallaroo and is just 140 kms, less than a 2 hour drive, from Adelaide. The area is named Copper Coast in recognition of the copper mining heritage of the region dating back to 1859 when copper was first discovered at Wallaroo Mines (Kadina) and in 1861 at Moonta Mines, the Cornish and Welsh made their home in Australia’s Little Cornwall. The importance of the Moonta Mines area is recognised as it is a National Heritage site.

Visited on Tuesday 3rd March and Wednesday 4th March. The main towns are Wallaroo, Moonta and Kadina. All full of history about the early days of copper mining, two days was not enough, suggest you allow more time when you visit.

We travelled up from Adelaide and spent three nights in Wallaroo. The other towns – Kadina and Moonta, are within easy driving distance. Each town has an interesting shopping centre with good eating places. The towns each have a history relating to the old copper mines and the Cornish miners who came to live here. Each town has an historic town walk and town drive which are easy to do and give interesting insights. Particularly noticeable are the solid stone buildings of the time. Moonta's special feature is the nearby Mines area which is worth exploring. Kadina has an interesting painted water tower and art gallery. Wallaroo has a jetty frequented by ‘fishermen‘ alongside the grain silos. We feel that our length of time here was just right for us, and we recommend this area for an enjoyable vacation.

Loved the history around the Copper
Coast, beautiful architecture and wonderful cafes, featuring (of course) Cornish pasties in acknowledgement of the early Cornish settlers.

There’s plenty to do hereabouts. We walked on several jetties and beaches. On Moonta jetty they were catching blueys and the black ink stains on Wallaroo jetty showed that squid were being caught there. There were shells to see on Wallaroo North Beach, where you can drive your car. On the main street of Wallaroo we spotted welcome swallows nesting in the shelters over the footpath. On the jetty at Wallaroo we saw pied cormorants in numbers on the conveyor columns just before a beautiful sunset. There were lots of good eating places and in Kadina we drank coffee in the Dragon Well Coffee Den, where some of the dazzling interior decoration features old record covers.
