Fed Up with $ealink...

It is almost impossible to book onto the vehicle ferry to and from the SMBI islands. They charge a premium price for lousy service and the airheads that answer the phones are rude and unhelpful. I have been trying to book for 2 days now to get home after an operation and their solution was to go sit there and hope I could get onto one of the ferries. It is a joke.

Straddie Flyer
Apr. 2021
Recently caught the Stradbroke Flyer passenger ferry between Cleveland and N Stradbroke Island. Note this is not the vehicular service - it's passengers only. Found the service excellent - reliable, punctual and very reasonably priced. The trip takes about 30 minutes. Ferry from Stradbroke at 7.25 am weekdays is quite crowded with high-school kids, but they are very well trained at allowing adults to borad ferry first.

Monopoly
Mar. 2021
Good quick trip to a great destination but there is a monopoly, and not just Stradbroke, they are everywhere, is a very sore point particularly with the Straddie locals. Over the past few years Sealink have tried to destroy the other family owned water taxi business and I am pretty sure they have not succeeded yet. They are the Qantas of ferries.
Like Qantas, against Rex and Virgin, they have tried to force them out by driving fares down to almost unsustainable level.
The good thing is the locals support the other business wholeheartedly.
Long may they be a thorn in the side.

Too expensive
Apr. 2021 • Couples
Too expensive $209 return for a car.
All the cars had to line up in the sun 20 minutes before departure.
For that price a sun sale would have been appreciated.
The overall ride was fine.

Recommendation : make the price more affordable.

Great destination - too XE to get there.

As a Redlands local visiting Straddie for decades (typically 2-3 time per year) we find ourselves for the first time searching for alternate venues due to the pricing of the vehicular ferry. It does like any commercial enterprise need to turn a profit and pay its way. However, especially given the challenges facing Islanders in a post-mining era, I would suggest this issue would be worthy of a local and state government think tank to assess how current pricing potentially stifles growth.

The best example I can think of is the government subsidy applied to the trans-Tasman ferry I.e. 50%. We travelled to Tassie last year in no small part due to the affordability of simply getting to the island.

Of all the ideas and schemes I see floated in the media to help underpin the island’s tourism future, I think think this basic gateway incentive would top them all.

Too expensive

As they have a monopoly on ferry travel to the island they charge whatever they like and you must cop it. The front line staff are great but the company is all about making money.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I caught the “Water Taxi” and both the captain and ticket boy were very rude and obnoxious, they didn’t make you feel welcome at all and had terrible attitudes. I will NOT be travelling with this company again and I recommend you don’t either..

Nice comfortable (25 minute) ride across to a spectacular island. The ferry staff were nice and it made for a pleasant trip. All in all a great trip

I took my car. I think next time I will just travel as a passenger and hire a scooter or use public transport. It was a nice ride.
