Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The mosque was said to have been initially constructed in the style of a Chinese temple and later rebuilt into a structure with a round dome and tall minarets typical of mosques elsewhere. In recent years, it was remodeled again in the style of a Chinese temple. It is interesting to see a mosque in that style. The mosque is also close to food market where muslin vendors sell delicious food.

I tell everyone I know that if you are going to travel to or even just pass through Xining, you are doing yourself a major disservice if you are not there on a Friday. Look up "Xining, Qinghai prayer times" online and plan to simply show up in the area around the mosque at least an hour before the Friday afternoon time. Trust me.
All of the other mosques in the city are closed for this the most important prayer service of the week. As such, thousands of the city's Muslims flock to the Dongguan area starting in the late morning. There is nothing like witnessing the sea of white skullcaps with family and friends exchanging warm greetings, eating, shopping in the market behind the Mosque, and eventually gathering in and spilling out around the Mosque for prayer. The crowds get pretty hectic and the crowd control monitors on hand will eventually ask you to cross the main street and watch from the other side during the actual worship services so once it starts getting really packed you might as well head across the way on your own and stake out a good spot.
Obviously, during this time you won't be able to enter the actual mosque unless you are a Muslim male participating in the prayer. Pictures are allowed but I personally have always felt it's much more appropriate and meaningful to just put down your camera and observe. You can take in so much more that way.
At other hours of the day you may enter and walk about the grounds. I've walked in without anyone asking for an entrance fee but others have told me they had to pay to get in. It is respectful to at least wear a long shirt and pants when entering the courtyard, and non-muslims are not permitted to enter the actual prayer hall. If you speak a little Chinese, take the time to chat with the people you see there. They are always friendly and happy to answer any questions.

Take a walk around the streets surrounding the Mosque for enjoying. The building itself is large an was huge back in the old days but not so much by modern standards.
It’s certainly an impressive structure with your time to visit. Recommend reading about the history to appreciate what seeing.

Come by during the prayer sessions- as long as you stay behind the main prayer assembly area they let you watch the proceedings.

This is one of the oldest mosques in west part of China. located central of city. great places to see. The main mosque has very unique architecture combine with traditional Hen and slightly with Tibetan style. It dose not exposes very much Islamic style. near the mosque, there are a couple nice streets with local food and especially testy local Hui food. i highly recommend to some their BBQ (Yang Rou Chuan). if you are vegetarian, try roasted potatoes, local white bread.

We arrived at the Grand Mosque in Xining around noon time when the Muslim second daily prayer was about to finish. We had to pay an entrace fee of RMB30 per visitor. We were given a guided tour by the Mosque's Akhund (Islamic priest).
The Xining Grand Mosque was first established in Soong Dynasty, about 1,000 years ago. The current Chinese temple-style, wooden structure was built in 1914, exactly 100 years ago.The Mosque has four minarets, pyayer calling towers. Two smaller ones were original with the 100-year Mosque, whike the two taller ones were gifts from the rich Arab oil states. In terms of the number of people gathered for public worship, the Xining Grand Mosque is the largest in China.
At the end of our tour, quite unexpectedly, our respected Akhund tour guide showed us some supposedly Iran-imported silk prayer carpets with "very friendly" prices. We got into quite irreligious price negotiations with the Akhund, and ended up with two supposedly Persian silk carpets in our luggage.

We were staying in Xining before taking the Sky Train to Lhasa so we stopped in here. It was interesting but not overwhelming.
