The Ancestral Temple, or Zumiao, is the prime tourist attraction in Foshan. Apart from the historic Taoist temple, the whole area offers a glimpse of local history and culture. The small museums of Huang Feihong and Ip Man tell the life and influence of kung fu masters. Quite interesting and informative for tourists.

There is lots to see in this museum, including the Ip Man Tong exhibits (being a fan of the Ip Man (aka, Yip Kai-Man) movies, I enjoyed these displays. Prior to visiting Foshan, I did not know that Ip Man was born in Song Yuen, Foshan.), Zumiao Temple, Confucius Temple, and Huang Feihong Memorial Hall. The Zumiao Temple was built in the 11th century for worshippers of Taoist Deity Xuan Wu. The Confucius Temple is much newer, having been built in 1911. The Ip Man Tong and Huang Feihong Memorial Hall were founded in 2001, and in honour of the two Foshan martial arts masters.

While touring the museum grounds, we stopped to view at least four different folk culture activities. Although I did not understand what was taking place, I enjoyed watching the performances. The activities included some form of Cantonese Opera, Huang Feihong Lion Dance, and more. Throughout the grounds there are numerous sculptures.

Other tourist sights at the museum include Zumiao Archway, Yunlong Column, Double Dragon Wall, Cang Zhen Ge Exhibition Hall, Guluozhilan Archway, Wishing Tree, Foshan Stone Tablet, Wangfu Stage, Lingying Arcway, Jinxiang Pool, Duansu Gate, Chongjigate, Front Hall, Main Hall, Qingzhen Building, Baoching Archway, Stelos Corridor, Jiexiaoliufang Archway, Lion-dancing Court, and more.

Before I commence my trips, I take a photo of my destination names in both English and Chinese. Then enroute, I’ll ask for directions whenever I am concerned that I might not be going the right way. I went from Guangzhou to Foshan by Metro (subway). I started on Line 2, and on my second change at Xilang Station, transferred to Guangfo Line, which took me to Foshan. I got off at Zumiao Station. While exiting the Station, look at the black Exit information boards, which will tell you the best Exit to take to get to Foshan Zumiao Museum.

Travel Tip re toilets: There are many public, restaurant, and other toilets throughout Guangzhou. However, few supply tissue. Thus, to be safe, always carry an adequate supply of tissue. Most of these toilets are fairly dirty, have water for washing, but supply nothing to dry yourself with.

Master Wong Fei Hung is one of the most beloved folk heroes among Chinese people worldwide and his stories were featured in many films and TV series since my grandfather’s generation. He was a great kungFu master and a physician. Foshan, Guangdong was his birthplace.
The ancestral temple was built to commemorate Master Wong Fei Hung and other Kungfu masters.
The highlight of the place is the Lion Dance performance. There’re only 3 performance slots everyday, which are 10am, 2.15am and 3.30am. If u plan to visit this place, then the Lion dance session is not to be missed. The tickets costs only CNY20 per pax.

The Ancestral Temple is not where their local worship their ancestor. It is a place where they worship their god named South Emperor who had protected their villages. Within the same vicinity, are Ip Man Museum and Huang Fei Hong Museum. For those who love Kungfu and like to know the histories of Ip Man and Huang Fei Hong. Entrance fee RMB20. They have lion dance performance daily at 10am and 2pm at Huang Fei Hong Museum. A wooden dummy infront of Ip Man Museum for you to practice your kungfu.

Take Guangzhou Metro and alight at Zhu Miao Station (sorry can't remember which exit, but you can check it out from the notice board or ask the station staff how to get there). Once you exit, you will see shopping malls and eateries on the opposite side of the road.

Spend about 1 to 2 hours there and you may proceed to do your shopping!

We decided to go here from Guangzhou and it was quite easy to get to via the metro. The station stop is Zumiao which is on the Guangfo line, head for exit D.

It costs 20RMB to get in and you can visit the Ip Man memorial hall (he was a Wing Chun master), the Foshan Ancestral Hall as well as Huang Feihong’s memorial hall(another Kung Fu master). Note the site is also known as the Foshan Zumiao museum. Unfortunately for us, we missing the Kung Fun show which is on at 10am and then again at 1500. The site is nicely laid out and despite being a Saturday, it was not overly busy.

My trip to Foshan was a pleasant one. As I have limited time, I just spent my few hours to the Zu Miao which is a historical site.
Zu Miao is a huge historical architectures which primarily separated into 4 distinct area of interest
1. Huang Fei Hong Memorial
2. Bei Di Temple
3. Kizil Cave Exhibition
4. Temple Construction and site history

The temple is almost a 1000 years and its rich historical artifact and wall art is visible throughout. Although some of the walkways are a little rundown and some ruins are not very well maintain overall it still a place worth visit.

I have uploaded a bunch of photos to share the beautiful Zu Miao.
Thanks for reading

The temple is easy to get to from the Zumiao stop on the Guanfo Subway Line. Take either exit C or D, when you reach the surface you are at the Nova Mall. Go around the either end and go straight to find the entrances. Just 20rmb and you can spend a half day learning about acting, Kungfu, and local history. Lots of little nook areas in the temple to explore. Lots of eateries nearby to make it a great day.

conveniently located in the city center of Foshan. can reach by various buses or underground metro, Zumiao Station. No matter whether you believe in Buddhist or not it is a place you must go as it is a key cultural relic unit under the state protection. Local people said that it was the head temple in Foshan.

you would be amused by the beautiful construction especially the ceramic tiles at roof and I think they are art pieces. The constructions of the temple can represents the Lingnan architecture and was honored as the Palace of the oriental Folk art and Palace of Lingnam Architecture.

The god in the main temple is the North King and has been worshiped since 1078. It was not made by clay but clothes, paper and bamboo sticks. I think is another great piece of paperwork. The wood craft at the table for worship of the Northern King is another great piece. You need to spend a day if you want to see everything in details. Besides the main temple, you should also go to Lingying Archway and
Wanfu Stage. The Archeway was built by lotus like arch, one over the other like a puzzle yet it can support a 3 storeys roof tops without a nail. The Wanfu Stage is a stage for Cantonese traditional opera and the construction is also very beautiful.

There are daily lion dance shows in Lion Dancing Court next to the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall which are : 10:30-11:00, 14:15-14:45 and 15:30-16:00.
so don't miss it and after the show you can also visit the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall.
Of course if you are interested in Wing Chun (Chinese Kung Fu), you should go to Ip Man Tong, the place in memory of the Wing Chun Master Ip Man.

If you still have time after the temple visit, exit via the East Gate where you pass through the Carp Square and go to the Foshan Lingnan Tiandi where you can see how the old Lingnan style houses turned to shops and restaurants and have a leisure time.

If you are interested in ceramic stuff, remember to buy combo ticket for both Ancestral Temple and Guangdong Shiwan Ceramics Museum as they have discount if you buy both tickets at the same time.

Opening hours:
open daily from 0830 - 1800 (stop tickets sales after 1730 hrs)

Normally I'd be bored visiting temples in China as they're all pretty much similar. However... Zu Miao is different as the Ip Man and Wong Fei Hong museums are all located in the same place. There are impressive kung-fu and lion dance performances that are held at the Wong Fei Hong museum. Definitely great cultural place to check out if you're in Foshan and especially if you're a fan of martial arts.
