Wonderful museum for free! We loved it because we are Coast Guard and there is a small room dedicated to a lot of the CG's influence in the area. Also in another room was a great little exhibit on the Mounted Boy Scouts-the only one in the world is on the island. It is a small museum but not one... More

This is a well-maintained, convenient property, with many artifacts from the island's history, with narratives (and a video) to explain them. The gift shop has an It is adjacent to the ferry dock, walking distance from everything.

The Ocracoke Preservation Museum is in an old Okracoke home and it felt like the long deceased owners had just left there alive and well or that we had stepped back in time for a visit. Interesting collection of items. Be sure to check out the things around and behind the home as well. Amy, the person in the gift... More

Just off the free parking lot in town by the harbor and National Parks Service is a historic house with authenic furniture and information about the area. The house also has an exhibition about the sinking of a US merchant ship in WWII. There's a museum store too. Worth a look.

This is a small museum that would interest people who are interested in local history. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. It was nice to do something different for an hour.

took my dad & daughter who wanted to stop in she had been there on a field trip.. Like taking a step back in time to see how people lived 50-100 years ago, great Deadrise fishing boat on display under cover outside, also a fossil pit outside that is fun for the kids..

Really enjoyed viewing the exhibits, especially the one on the natives (Brogue). Cute gift shop with items you wouldn't find elsewhere, fantastic book selection! And best of all, it's free!

This place has so much information about the area packed into a small space. If you are even remotely interested in history, you have to stop here. They had information about military activities in the area as well as interesting discoveries in the area. My favorite was a fossilized bison tooth found in the sound that is over 10,000 years... An informative and enjoyable way to learn some of the island's history. Great little gift shop, too.
