This is our third year visiting Oak Island and we love it!! We come with about 8-9 people every year (parents, grandparents, kids) and we all enjoy it. The beaches are not crowded at all so there's plenty of space. The kids enjoy the waves...More

Very clean with lots of public access and parking. Moderately busy in the summer. No public restrooms at the beach that I am aware of.

We went for a wedding on Holden Beach and decided to give them space. So we stayed on Oak Island. One of the best beaches we have been to in the states. If you're looking to get away from the concrete jungles and touristy areas....More

As a college student I was the youngest person on the beach by a lot, it's mostly a place for people in their 50s+ as well as for couples with little children. The beach isn't too crowded and there was plenty of public access spots...More

We came to Oak Island specifically because leashed dogs are allowed in the beach all day. These beaches are not as crowded as the ones farther north and there is ample public access and parking. Friendly people with their friendly dogs make this a wonderful...More

I grew up in Florida and have been to so many beaches, but Oak Island beach takes the cake. It is so clean, no litter was seen anywhere. Even during the busiest times of day, the beach was never really packed. I'm used to searching...More

Great, reasonably priced family or couples getaway. Not a lot of carnival type attractions, great fishing and quiet events and mornings for walks on the beach. Oak island is situated so you get both the sunrise and sunset views. Also great half day outings to...More

The beaches on Oak Island are great. They are wide. You can wade pretty far into the water as well. There is plenty of room to sit and for the kids to play.

I am confused about all the comments on Oak Island beaches. I just spent two weeks visiting Ocean Isle, Holden Beach, Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, and Emerald Isle. All of those barrier islands have huge, deep, white sand beaches. Then I went to Oak Island and was kind of disappointed. The beach is really, really shallow at high tide (maybe 20-30 feet deep?) and there is a wide strip of gray/black silt covering most of the dry sand. Its actually crunchy when you walk on it. I am trying to see the beauty in Oak Island, since my husband had fallen in love with a house on the ICW there, but after having walked all those other big NC beaches, I am feeling a bit bummed out on OKI. Can you shed some light - is it just a temporary thing?

Interesting perspectives on Oak Island. But, from a real estate perspective I think they have it all wrong. Area is just beginning to develop and that's when you jump in, not when it been over developed like the other... More
