Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went here on a Tuesday afternoon and it was a great time.
First, we are a family of 5 with children 10 and up. This starts at the fish hatchery and winds up to the top of the rock. Beautiful views await you. Let me give some practical tips:
1) Stop at the ranger station first. They give you tips and trail maps that are better than what I could find online. The trail codes are a little confusing so this extra info gave us confidence
2) Be prepared. The hike up is 2.68 miles from the East parking lot. Trail rating is moderate but it is strenuous uphill over 1000 ft. If you are not use to this style of strain then stick to the lower hills.
3) If you go down the west side of the rock it is about 3.5 miles of uphill (again) then down. Total is just over 6 miles. It is a great loop but just know what your getting into.
Great hike, views, and workout. Enjoy!

The trail up to John's Rock is a nice walk. About half way up the trail it does start to climb so if you are not in that good of shape taking a few breaks is a good idea. It took us about one hour to reach the top of John's Rock and we stayed up there another hour. So altogether it was a three hour round trip. I would suggest with the heat of summer to start your hike earlier in the day rather than later just because of storms that start up in mid afternoon. It was a great place to take a lunch to the top and enjoy the great view of Looking Glass Rock across the valley.

The John Rock loop trail start from the fish hatchery and accends to the top of a granite escarpment hundreds of feet above the valley floor for an incredible view of the surrounding area. The trail itself is really interesting in that it takes you through several botanical "zones", with varying vegetation in each. Make sure you bring plenty to drink, and a picnic for the top of the mountain. The total trail is about six miles, so give yourself plenty of time.

Our favorite ‘go to’ hike - never disappoints!
This hike is beautiful any time of year. We have done this hike 100+ times and it still feels brand new every time we go. We like to hike it ‘counterclockwise’ - the opposite direction of most hikers. It’s slightly steeper this way, but after we reach Johns Rock, it’s downhill the rest of the way. Hiking clockwise, after reaching the ‘rock’, you still have uphill to climb before the descent ...
Just under 6 miles, this is the perfect day hike, perhaps followed by some fly-fishing on the Davidson - or waterfall visits along 276 ... just do it 👍
