Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built...

Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built in 1952. We are located exactly 9 miles from beautiful downtown Highlands, and 9 miles from downtown Franklin. We are 1/3 of a mile from the breathtaking Cullasaja Falls (means "sweetwater" in Cherokee). Also, 5 miles from Dry Falls (seen in The Last of the Mohicans). Our guests can browse our huge rock shop and gift store, or eat hot boiled peanuts on our front porch overlooking the beautiful Cullasaja River. Our gem mine is all weather fun for the whole family. Macon County is considered the "Gem Capital of the World" for a reason! Come and buy a bucket to sift! Small Buckets are $10 each, and one per person. Ultimate Buckets are $30 each or 2 for $50. These buckets are big and can be shared! We also have a $100 Bucket Club. This bucket is great for families. With this, you receive a $45 free cut of a gemstone that you find! Chuck is a master lapidary and we can help you choose what would be the best thing in your find to cut! We are handicapped accessible and very kid/pet friendly.

We've experienced several of the area's local gem mines over the last decade and always end up back at Jackson Hole for another treasure hunt each year. Larger buckets tend to have the larger stones in general. We've had a dozen or so gems cut and set on premise. Not only is the craftsmanship outstanding and the jewelry beautiful, but... More

Best gem mining place I've visited. Not only did we get a wide variety of gems in our 2 for $50 buckets, but they were big and beautiful. Kids loved it. Lots of adorable items in their shop. Mention website discount for 10% off. The shop keepers were friendly, kind, and really took their time with us. With little kids,... More

We have young children and were looking for a fun activity in the mountains. Both the kids and adults enjoyed this stop.

This is always a fun stop on the road between Franklin and Highlands, NC. Purchase some pails of dirt dug from nearby riverbeds and sit at the water flowing troph. They give you sifting trays and good instructions. A half an hour later, you have a bunch of raw stones, including emeralds, rubys, saphires and garnetts. Take home to your... More

Took three kids and three adults here to mine (really, to pan) for gems. It was a lot of fun for the kids, they make sure there is plenty for the kids to find in the buckets of dirt. The guy working the "mine" was super friendly and helpful. Seemed kind of expensive at first ($50 for a bucket of... More

Highly recommend this place for those who want to gem mine but don't want to spend all day at it or get wet etc. Owners were fantastic and helpful. The young man who helps outside was so kind and knowledgeable. If your kids are 5+ definitely just go ahead and get the 2 buckets for $50. You get a lot... More

We purchased the large bucket of sand and rocks. It was full of gems for the kids once we washed away the sand. Afterward the staff told us what gems we had in our booty. Very nice

This would be a great place for kids to "mine" for gems. You purchase a bucket of sand and filter it through water. It's a small facility, but it looked like fun. The store was clean and the tenants very nice. You can buy cold drinks for your journey here.
