Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hike up the trail is steep, but peaceful and pretty. Once at the top it was a little disappointing. There are giant cell towers up there that look awful, not to mention you are getting exposed to that at close range. There is also cow poop all over! We took the dirt road down and seen more cows in the woods.

The 3/4 mile hike up was through woods and the trail was well marked and maintained. Some roots and rocks to step over but a relatively easy hike. I am 71 and had no problems. The meadow with cows and the serene view were great. I could see Mt Mitchell. The communication towers were not a distraction. The rocks to sit on and cool breeze made it a perfect place for a picnic to enjoy the view. No facilities are available. You can take the gravel service road down which is easier if desired.

We were told about the Bearwallow Mountain trail by one of the guides at Chimney Rock. He promised us a sunset we would not forget and the view certainly delivered! It was stunning. The husband and I sat in awe of the beautiful splendor of the place. Mountains and clouds as far as the eye can see. The trail was pretty easy to climb and didn't take long and for those unable to climb, the top can be easily reached via the access road. This is, by far, the best thing we have seen in our 3 trips to the area!

This is one of the best hikes I have ever done. It’s a mildly difficult walk up some rough terrain but easy enough a child could do it with no problem. The walk up isn’t long. On the way down we took the service road which was super fast. The trailhead is to your right when you approach.
Bonus, there is clear and fast cell service at the top as there are clearly towers up there. You could instagram or tweet your view live when you get there.
Be careful if coming from Gerton because the road up is extremely narrow and gravel. This isn’t such a huge issue if not for the fact that this gravel road is the main road the residents use to get up and down to their houses. I was terrified I’d run into a car coming the opposite way because there is literally no room to drive by someone. It’s so bad I seriously considered just driving down the opposite side of the mountain when I left the trailhead, which is a normal road.
There is plenty of parking, it is all side street parking. I saw about 15-20 cars parked.

I have lived and worked within sight of Bearwallow for over
50 years, but had never been to the top. After my youngest
daughter went up the mountain on a school field trip, I was
spurred into action. I walked up the trail to the top and back
down the access road. I was pleasantly surprised at the
excellent trail condition because of recent record rainfall.
I enjoyed the cows being there as it reminded me of my
grandparents farm in Virginia. I walked 2.5 miles total and
took over 100 pictures. An excellent outing!!!

It is a great drive for the view. It's a nob of big houses, and I think there is a club up there of some kind. I loved the mountain view!

a short hike up the mountain - not to strenuous - lots of switch backs leads to a huge pasture with cattle and a little farther up to a set of cell towers. nice rocks and trees to relax on and enjoy the spectacular views - easy walk down using the gravel road

An amazing hike up the hill. If you take the trail it's shorter but a little harder then the road. Steep hike up. Well worth the hike on the top there where cows and some of the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains.
