There is a small dock at the pond where you can view the area, we saw turtles from the dock. There were lots of lily pads that were beginning to bloom, it was pretty. You can rent double kayaks or canoes. There is a landing to enter the kayak, you don't have to try to get into it while it... More

We camped for two nights at Merchants Millpond in our Aliner trailer. It's a splendid campground with wonderful campsites for tents or trailers (good isolation of sites; nearby water), clean restrooms and showers, and access to a trail leading to the Visitors Center. I gave it 4 stars because of no gray water disposal site (for dish water; no sink... More

Merchants Millpond was originally called Norfleets Millpond and was built in 1811. It was referred to as Merchants Millpond ; the name that stuck, because it became the center of economic activity in Gates County. But don't come here expecting to see a wide open pond. this is a swamp with numerous Cypress trees growing from the pond. There is... More

This was our 2nd state park visited on the thanksgiving road trip, and it was absolutely fantastic. Pictures do not do justice of the beauty of this park. Just go and be amazed by the cypress. I would recommends going when it's cool weather because of insects. We went in November and it was perfect.

A cold overcast day is probably not the best time to evaluate a Park. Luckily I had been there before. The visitor center has a great display of history, flora and fauna in the modern visitor center. Staff are friendly and exhibits are professional. Boasting its very own alligator, the lake and estuaries have wild beauty. You can rent canoes... More

We brought one kayak and rented a double (they don't have singles) on a Saturday morning. Two other groups were checking in but the kind woman at the counter got us in and out quickly. The weather was perfect and although I expected more color the views were amazing. We loved the reflection on the water and couldn't stop taking... More

I led a large University of NC Outing Club canoe/kayak camping trip into the Great Dismal Swamp, which was, no pun intended, bleak. Then, on the way back, we stopped for an unscheduled visit to Merchants Millpond State Park, which was spectacular. We canoed out way through beautiful Cyprus trees. My friend Marc got this spectacular picture of 5 turtles... More

An otherworldly experience! Gorgeous Tupelo and cypress trees emerging from dark waters that reflected the sky and canopies above. We kayaked the lake, and went the longest route. Some of the buoys were difficult to spot at times, so we were a little worried about that. We could see how it might be easy to get lost, but we made... More

We visited with our Cub Scout Pack for the weekend in the group camping area. There was plenty of room, the bathrooms were near enough, the drinking water was near enough also. Trash cans were in the campsite and emptied daily. While there was another group in a different section of the group area, we overlapped only at the toilet... More

We camp here several times per year, with family and with scouts. Our two spring trips were excellent, although be careful of the red bugs (chiggers). It is well worth your time and money to treat your clothes with permethrin in the spring and early summer. Later in the year I enjoy it even more and the red bugs seem... More
