This was a wonderful experience. The climb to the top is strenuous, but you will be rewarded with terrific views of the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the surrounding area around the lighthouse and Buxton.

Take an hour and explore learn something, explore something, and do something more. Jumping out taking a photo and driving off is lame. Enjoy learning about this wonderful area and climb to the heavens in the light house. Fun with so much beauty.

A magnificent lighthouse! Such a beautiful view from the top! The climb to the top can get a little crowded on a nice day, but it is definitely worth it!

We went on a very hot day. We were the last group before they closed the lighthouse to tours. It was 103 degrees inside. We were warned and it was mid afternoon on a sweltering July day. Even with the heat, my wife, son and...More

This was my favorite part of the Outer Banks! You can go up in the lighthouse but you may have to wait especially during the summer (~30-60 mins)until you get the chance. It costs roughly $8 to go up and it's a pretty good climb....More

We were so glad we got to climb the lighthouse. We could not got out on the deck because of high winds but it was still worth it. Not as hard a climb as I thought it would be!

It was sunny when we went as well however based on how much of and impact the wind made, I would say I would not recommend this for a rainy day activity even if it would be less busy
Yet another way for the state of North Carolina to make money off of you... my wife and I have 3 elementary aged kids, so for us we would be charged $28 to simply climb stairs to enjoy the view? No military discount? Charging the elderly and disabled? We are from Western North Carolina and there are no fees for the overlooks on the Great Smoky Mountain highways... and I promise the views are much more spectacular.
