Description:

The Jungle Place is a licensed sanctuary for the endangered Spider Monkey....

The Jungle Place is a licensed sanctuary for the endangered Spider Monkey. They rescue and rehabilitate orphaned monkeys who were victims of the illegal pet trade, poaching, habitat destruction and exploitation. All too often these beautiful, highly intelligent primates become victims when humans and nature collide in a natural paradise like The Riviera Maya. The in-person tours they offer to help support the sanctuary are the very definition of sustainable and ecologically responsible tourism. The owners, Heidi and Joel, are a wonderful couple who originally moved to the area to retire but instead devoted their lives to care for these rescued monkeys. They provide them with an incredible amount of love, individual attention, medical care and specialized diets, all within a beautiful and meticulously well-kept habitat right in their native jungle.Visit in-person to meet the owners and the monkeys, view the facilities and habitat, and see first-hand the level of care that your donation helps provide. Be sure to reserve your tour well in advance, as they allow only a very limited number of visits per week.

We loved our experience at The Jungle Place! My husband planned this excursion as part of our honeymoon in Mexico, because he knows how much I love monkeys. We rode the collectivo to Chemuyil, and then took a taxi to the sanctuary. We had a wonderful time! The monkeys jump and climb all over you in a contained space as... More

Wonderful once in a life time...well twice for us...experience! Loved our second visit as much as the first. Don't take my word for it...read the reviews. Email them for a scheduled visit. No walk ins. May take a few emails to get a response but you will hear back. Keep trying. As mentioned in other reviews- no sun screen, or... More

This was an amazing addition to our trip to Mexico which we would recommend highly. The sanctuary is around a 30 minute drive from Playa del Carmen (costs around 700 pesos in a cab, one way) and is home to around 80 spider monkeys, all of whom have been rescued from the illegal pet trade, orphaned through poaching, or displaced... The Jungle Place Spider Monkey Sanctuary was one of my best memories of my trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. Heidi and Joel are so compassionate about the work they do and it was an experience I will soon not forget. Please if you are going to this part of Mexico book a visit, the monkey's need you. To sit with... More

I doubt I can say anything that hasn't been covered in previous reviews. It was a great experience that I would definitely do again. My husband and I drove ourselves there and unfortunately the other group of 6 people who had a reservation were almost an hour late and we had to wait for them. Heidi and Joel were great... More

My husband and I visited The Jungle Place this past Wednesday. It was amazing!!!! There are lots of commercialized tours you can do in Playa Del Carmen.... but if you want a true feel for this area visit Heidi and her husband, and see the beautiful work they are doing with the monkeys from this area. All these monkeys have... More

Visited with husband and friends a few weeks ago and must say it was the most amazing experience. Heidi and Joel are totally dedicated to the welfare of the spider monkeys and not all out for commercial gain. We spent a couple of hours with these amazing creatures climbing all over us, cuddling on our laps, sitting on our shoulders... More

My teenage daughter and I visited the Jungle Place a few days ago and had an amazing experience! It is a bit rough getting there...it's a few turns off the highway, down a long, dirt, bumpy road. Luckily we had a patient cab driver who had been there once before and knew what to expect. (Heidi (the owner) gives excellent... More
