Definitely worth a visit

Worth looking in this small museum, gives a perspective on the early days and the hardship on our indigenous people.

If raining then it is worth a visit. Apart from story plaques little to see. Much of the stuff is pathetic. Great building but needs a lot of amaginion to make it more interesting.

Total disappointment
May 2021
Don't expect this museum to be one of the magnificence of Rottnest Island. Instead it is completely on the history of the abuse and mistreatment of the Aboriginals in the early settlement as a penal jail. The museum is a cold presentation of the brutal side of history. Such a shame it could not have been contrasted with the beauty and character of the island itself. Our family has donated countless irreplaceable memorabilia to the Rottnest Island Authority and that seems to have disappeared. We would have loved to have seen some of that displayed to depict the brighter side of history.

Important Stop

We knew some of the history of Rottnest but valued the time spent at the museum to broaden our knowledge. Highly recommend a well spent 30-40 minutes for a gold coin donation.

Full marks to all the volunteers who man the various spots like the museum.

Where did the money go?
Feb. 2021
Media reports suggest $1million spent on refurbishment. Hard to believe as there is nothing there when compared to the previous collection.
The story now focuses mainly on the Aboriginal story and little else.

Sad history of Rottnest
Jan. 2020 • Family
Entry is by a gold coin donation and it is well worth spending some time learning more about the history of Rottnest particularly the sad treatment of indigenous Australians. There was so much pay and suffering for the nation’s first people and sadly the suffering at the burial ground continues today.

Dark history
Nov. 2019 • Couples
A small grain house converted to a museum to show the dark side of British colonisation. Locals seemed regretful if the past and that is probably why this unsavoury past was portrayed. Unknown to the "new" masters, aborigines were incarcerated for what they had been doing. Sadly, they were banished to this place under harsh conditions. Similar to various places in Europe, these visits served to remind us the sinfulness in our nature. Lest we forget how we could mistreat others if we are not mindful.

Sense of History and Context

Visited after being on the island a few days. Very helpful staff and only a gold coin entry fee. Covers history greater than Rottnest Island.
