- Robynne MYamba, Australia4 contributionsDO IT!!!!!!The trip over the Pink Lake was absolutely worth every cent!! To see it from the air is the only way to go! Hayden our pilot was fabulous and gave us very informative commentary about everywhere we went!! It was great to see the Skywalk, Murchison River and all the coastline by air!! Would recomment this tour to everyone!!!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- rob27898Port Kennedy, Australia463 contributionsIt’s pinkIt’s a big pink lake that smells bad. It’s very photogenic and makes for a great insta post but it’s a challenge to get too down steep sand dunes with no real access. The shore line is crusty and dirty so no white shoes! Looks fab though and time of day is really important for ‘that’ photo otherwise the water looks blue like a normal lake…Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- bobjanhBrisbane, Australia2,416 contributionsGreat viewpoint for the Pink LakeJust a couple of km short of Port Gregory beach, the lookout is only a few minutes off the main road to Kalbarri. At the right time of day, right sunlight and cloud cover, the lake truly is pink. Lovely view.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 May 2024
- BradHong Kong, China178,289 contributionsHutt Lagoon - pink lake south of KalbarriThis is probably the most famous of the Pink Lakes in Western Australia. Located around 55 km south of Kalbarri, Hutt Lagoon is a convenient stop to make when driving to/from Kalbarri. There is a short turnoff to the west side of the lake towards Port Gregory. After a few kilometres you can stop your vehicle and walk close to the shoreline where you see the peculiar pink water colour, caused by the presence of high concentration of a micro-algae. Seems best time to visit is midday around 10am to 2pm and on sunny days. We visited fairly late in the afternoon in route to Kalbarri. The water still had a noticeable pink shade. Well worth making a brief detour to the viewpoints at Hutt Lagoon to see this unique Pink Lake.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024

Just off the main road to Kabarri in Port Gregory. We were fortunate to arrive on a sunny day and the lake was quite pink. We were informed that on a cloudy day, it might not be as colourful. There are two spots to view the lake. It is accessible right up to the shoreline on normal footwear.

We stopped by on the way to Kalbarri. There was a viewpoint on the Port Gregory side of the lake. It gives a nice panoramic view of the lake but we went during dusk so it wasn't super pink. You are able to head down to the lake area and see the colourations easier by the shore.
Possibly something to do during daylight hours to get a better experience.

This lake is a perfect stop off on the way home to Perth from Kalbarri.
Make sure you drive around the lake as you get good views from Port Gregory side, the other side doesn’t make it look as pink.
Interesting thing to see for those that like nature kind of things :)

This is our second visit to this lagoon that we wanted to see at a different time of the year. Pink Lake is the nickname given to Hutt Lagoon for the color of its waters. This color is the consequence of a microalgae that is also cultivated for commercial purposes in the lake. Being below sea level, this lagoon is salty because in addition to the rainwater supply, the ocean water filters inside through the dunes that separate it from the sea. Being a marine salinity, a small shrimp is also bred here. The George Grey Dr. runs for about fifteen kilometers along the shore of the lake, but being only a little higher than the lake and due to the presence of high vegetation, it is not possible to have a good view of the lake from this side. There are some paths which, however, end immediately due to the presence of pools of water and very muddy soil. To get a good view of Hutt Lagoon you have to take the Port Gregory Rd. This 5 km road is very close to the lake, has no vegetation on either side, and just before Port Gregory it reaches an elevation of a few meters over the lagoon. The color of the water becomes more and more pink as you approach the lookout located about 5-6 in height. Even if the lookout, and the shore under it, are the best places to take picture, we suggest you continue the road towards Port Gregory. The road passes a small inlet with the lake water on both sides. While on the left you can see some water birds feeding in fresh water, on the right the color of the lagoon water reaches its maximum color intensity. This our second visit showed us a larger and more colorful lake than the previous one. In fact it should be remembered that since the supply of sea water in this 1 m depth shallow lake is limited, during the summer it is almost dry, giving way to large areas of dry salty mudflat.

I had seen photos of the Pink Lake before heading to Kalbarri and was keen to see it in person. As much as it was nice to see up close on that particular day we were there there was not much variation in the coloring of the lake. The best part of the visit was taking us into Port Gregory and a look along the beach. This spot would be perfect for a picnic and the kids to have a fish and play in a sheltered area.

Definitely worth a visit. The pink lake is vivid however when the sun is shining right above the lake. Need to time it well. The one in Esperance is no longer pink hence I think this is the only pink lake in WA at the moment.

We took the scenic route up to Kalbarri so we could see the Pink Lake. Road was great going in and did add much time onto our trip, but was definitely worth the detour. Bit overcast and cloudy and I would love to see it on a sunny day. The little bits of sun we got...amazing!

Sublime beauty and ethereal. We took the Pink Lake Buggy Tour run by Port Gregory Caravan Park which took us along the beach past the long gone whaling station, through sand dunes and down onto the pink sand crusted lake shores.
Sam is passionate about her slice of heaven and kept us engaged and happy. We got to see hidden places most would not get to see.
Highly recommend this tour. Great for those who hate walking or with limited mobility also.
Enjoy, exhale and embrace!

The water was a lot higher this time, being winter, and the lake was far... pinker. If that's even a word. The entrance to the viewing area is tough to find, but worth the effort. There's a track south of the mining entrances, and we went down there to see the lake. The last time was in summer, the the kids walked out onto the salt beds and marvelled at the way the salt came off in little sheets. This time the lake was full, so we just took photos from the edge. We've also viewed it from the Port Gregory road, but not sure if there's anywhere else to see it from. The view from the Port Gregory road is wonderful, although the road is narrow and there's not many places to park up safely. We sat on the wall and watched the wind whip up the water into little pink foam bands. Amazing sight.

What a remarkable natural sight! The "Pink Lake" (Hutt Lagoon) is only a short detour to/from Kalbarri. When planning a visit, keep in mind that the pink colour of the lake is more vivid during the sunnier parts of the day, especially between 10am-2pm. If you have a keen eye you may even see microorganisms swimming in the lake. For the adventurous travellers, you can hire a buggy and drive around the lake or even take a scenic flight and see this impressive sight from the air.

Hi, I'll be visiting Perth in 2nd half of October and thinking to see either Hutt Lagoon or Lake Hillier. We have 7-8 days in total and am wondering if its worth it just to go see either of those pink lakes? Otherwise, is there a road trip we can take from Perth to either of the places so we can cisit nearby places as well, as we might rent a car too. And at this time, which lake would be more pink? Thank you! 🙏

Sheenal,
Hutt Lagoon is the pinkest lake you will ever see.Temperatures at the moment October are ideal and likely to be 25 to 34 deg C.View Pink lake on the Port Gregory road side first then travel back to Grey Road connecting Kalbarri for a second viewing. Stay in Kalbarri as it is about half an hour drive further north. Kalbarri has some beautiful coastal gorges and inland gorges and is situated on the Murchison River at the river mouth. Stay a night or two because you will need that time. Shark bay is next north for stromatalites and dolphins at Monkey Mia enjoy....

Is there any tour package from Perth to Pink Lake, Natural Window and Pinnacle?
Written 24 January 2019
Because it's just an hour north of Geraldton most tours are organised from there. There is also an airplane tour leaving Geraldton which takes in the Pink Lake, sea cliffs of Kalbarri, Murchison River, Abrolhos Islands, and Wiebbe Hayes Fort.

Danke für die Bewertung, super hilfreich! Weißt du eventuell noch, wo der Zugang zum See war?
Eventuell GPS Koordinaten für Google Maps? 😁

Am I allowed to collect some pink lake water in a bottle and bring it back home?
Written 28 May 2018
I'm tempted to ask why!!! To analyse its composition? If it's to see its colour I very much doubt if you'll find it noticeable. Lake colour seems very dependent on sunlight/cloud etc. I can't imagine anyone stopping you from extracting a bottle's worth as it's not a supervised official tourist attraction. I'm assuming you're not expecting to fly with it ...?

Hello, I would like to visit Hutt Lagoon between February 20 and March 5. Is it as spectacularly pink as it seems from the photos during this time of the year? Or is it all dried up and not worth visiting. Even if some parts of it remain so beautifully pink it is good enough for me. Please let me know. Thanks a lot in advance, Matan.

Hi, I would like to visit the lake in January but I am worried that due to the heat evaporating the water, the lake will not be as pink as winter months. Can anybody confirm if this is true? Thank you.
Written 27 September 2017
The lake is always pink though on sunny days it is brighter due to the UV factor. Use a polarising lens on your camera for best effect!

Which is pinker Hutt Lagoon or Pink Lake in Esperence ? I'm confused. People seem to mix the images on google. Also which is better to see at what times of the year? Is one swimmable and not the other?
Thanks so much to anyone with answers for me ! To visit a pink lake has been a dream

My experience was at Port Gregory not Esperence. The most dramatic photos seem to be Esperence. Of course these two locations are very far apart.
Written 10 June 2017
It is not too far out of your way if you are heading from or to Kalbarri.
I do not think you should swim in it but I could be wrong
