Castlemaine Botanical Gardens has many mature trees, mainly European The gardens date from the 19th century.when Castlemaine was a flourishing town due to the Great Australian Goldrush. The Gardens also have a lake and facilities for visitors such as drinking water, seats and toilets. In the autumn, the leaves change colour, becoming red an gold.. By the way, the walk from the train station is not very far; the gardens bloom, especially in spring.

I stayed three nights in Castlemaine on a Victorian road trip. These gardens were a highlight. In constant use by family groups picnicking, dog walkers, runners, child care groups and nature lovers like me. Circuit walk around the lake, trees identified, a bird sanctuary for water birds and parrots. Across the road from a cafe and shopping precinct walking distance from the railway station. I would return to Castlemaine just to visit the gardens.

My wife and I were fortunate to be staying at the Castlemaine Gardens Big 4 Holiday Park abutting the Botanic Gardens. So for the 3 days we were there we took every opportunity to walk in and around the gardens. The Botanic Gardens is located on the north side of Castlemaine near The Mill and Railway Station.
The lawns and gardens on the southern end are beautifully manicured with the northern end needing a bit more attention. I suspect the southern end gets the majority of work as it is the end closer to the CBD. There is lake on the southern end which has a variety of ducks and other aquatic birds happily swimming in it. The gardens have a children's playground in the centre, multiple electric barbeques and shelters/rotundas to keep you out of inclement weather. If you're a fitness fanatic, the granitic sand path surrounding the path is flat and 1.7Km in length. Perfect for a run. Also look out for the kookaburras which are plentiful.
Overall a very nice park with different species of trees and plants. Well worth a visit.

A lovely stroll through the gardens. Little disappointing there wasn't more information or descriptions about the trees eg. date planted and names etc. However, the buildings did provide some insight into the history of the gardens & the book walk was very entertaining.

We loved walking around the botanical gardens. The fountain had a lovely refurb and looked great. A gentle stroll around lake Joanna. We spotted ducks, galahs, magpies, even a turtle or 2 in the lake. Lots of shade and a great playground down the other end of the lake for the kids.

This is such a very pretty area that seems to be well used by the locals. We saw families having picnics, people walking and people running around the park. It is well set out with lots of mature trees and beautifully landscaped garden areas. We sat here for a while just enjoying the peace.

Visiting Castlemaine my friend had the Gardens on his list so we called in. A popular place on this hot summer day, this seemingly free-form elongated oblong of peace and tranquility is a lovely place for some time out. These are not your formal flower bed type gardens but rather a lovely, slight haphazard array of trees, a pond, a listed tree, playground and unused heritage buildings.

The most attractive feature of the Castlemain Botanical Gardens are the mature European trees. They have shed their golden leaves and now, with Spring in the air, the new buds will appear. The green shoots will bring life to these old trees, it's a great time to observe the new life in this old garden.

Great place for family or couples, amazing lake and birds and a great walking or cycling track about 1.7 km circle. BBQ facilities available as is a great children's playground. Aged trees provide ample shade

Visiting Castlemaine to catch up with a friend and running early, I went for a drive around the township for a look. As I drove past the gardens, the beautiful wisteria-clad pergola caught my attention so I pulled up to go for a wander. A lovely mix of sun drenched grass for those wishing to work on their tans, plenty of beautiful shady trees for hot days, bench seats, gazebos for shade, picnic lunches and photo ops.
A top little spot. Only not giving 5 stars as I wouldn’t consider it a ‘must-see’.

I noticed that there were four areas that looked as though they were being aerated. Would you kindly tell me what this is for thank you. Cheers orlena Charleston
Written 3 July 2019
The usual reason for aeration is to creates holes down through the often compacted upper soil layer (roughly 6-13mm) so air, water and nutrients can reach grass roots and encourage new growth. I was in Castlemaine in late March and it was very dry, I'm uncertain as to what rain they may have had since then but they may be expecting some, hence the aeration. If you Google "Botanical Gardens Health" you might find that more specific information is available.
