Discovered The Mill on a recent trip to Castlemaine and very pleased we did.

Some very interesting artist studios - with some lovely and chatty artists - along with seemingly endless secondhand stores, various boutique food and drink offerings all topped off with a German-style cafe. Entrance is free and if you’re planning a visit allow two hours plus.

Great way to spend some time.

This would obviously be a great area to visit in non covid times but it loses a bit of attraction when nothing is open, just saying, we are in regional Victoria and allowed to be open. We went in search of the Coffee Cafe but when we eventually found it because it wasn't open we had to walk back to where we had originally parked to get a coffee from a pop up coffee van. We sat and went through tourist information while drinking our coffee and made plans for the day. We paid a visit to the vintage bazaar and there are some interesting offerings but because I sell regularly on eBay I know these prices are outrageous. We walked the remainder of the complex and called into a 'Butcher' where we purchased some highly priced sausages from a very unfriendly person. Not much here to encourage a future visit.

At full operation, this place would be great to spend the whole day. With coronavirus, the place was a little quiet with several of the shops closed. From what was open, it provided plenty of fun. The secondhand/vintage area fills a whole shed, which requires a couple hours to fully look at. The butcher offers a glorious display of local fresh meats and deli goods. The chocolate shop has excellent offerings of quality chocolate. Would definitely go back when things are in full swing to the coffee house, cellar door, and further exploration.

Amazing place you could spend hours there browsing through the huge collection of Vintages Clothes, Furniture etc etc. Then check out the Cottage Industries on site, brewery, cheese making, small goods. Finish off with a coffee or meal in the gorgeous Austrian themed Cafe. Congrats Castlemaine!

This is a great area for Castlemaine to promote for visitors as it has something for everyone and is well laid out that you can “discover” something new around each corner. The vintage bizarre- secondhand section is quite large and you can easily lose an hour or two. We had no chance to dine at Das Kaffeehaus around 1.30pm as people were already waiting for tables. The waitress was apologetic and it looked like a good experience. The brewery was open but other places were closed for the Christmas break. We will just have to go back. It was very busy everywhere we went this day.

What a fab find. Should have bought the vintage items I saw there as I didn't see them anywhere else on our travels. Lovely artists galleries. Lunch at the Viennese cafe was most memorable. The matri ds in their colourful shirts were extremely attentive and full of good banter. I got taken on a tour d torte!! The food was very good and the glorious setting most unexpected. The Mill is so much moe than you will be expecting if you've even heard of it, don't miss it

A co-worker suggested this place when I asked for a recommendation of where to catch up with my Uncle. I didn't quite know what to expect.

The Mill started as Castlemaine Woollen Mill in 1875, and finished as Victoria Carpets in 2013. The building is mind-blowing .. there are large chimneys everywhere. Castlemaine Woollen Company was one of the first large-scale woollen mills in the state.

But now The Mill Castlemaine has evolved into a food and artisian tourist destination. This is an absolutely amazing space. There is so much packed in here... cafes, micro breweries, markets, art stores and spaces, wineries, cheese places ... the list goes on. You can literally spend a whole day in this place.

And in fact, my Uncle and I are both not shoppers... we are explorers, but we both said we would return. He actually purchased a book that had been written by one of the resident artists. We had lunch and coffee on site. It is a fabulous place.

The market part is good, as said it's a vintage bazaar, most things over priced but worth a look. The food area not much open on weekdays. Only the chocolate shop and the one cafe, which I think was German food. Wouldn't rush back.

The Mill is in the centre of Castlemaine. It was once a woolen mill. There are lots of things to see. Probably the best is the junk (sorry, antiques) hall. In the event you can find something you like, you may have trouble finding someone to serve you. Much of the content is from the "good old days," the sort of stuff I found in my grandmother's back shed.

If you like looking though vintage clothes and furniture then this is the place for you. Unfortunately we found and it was a bit pricey. Not many shops were open when we went which was a bit disappointing but we did have a lovely milkshake from the ice cream shop. It wasnt really a place I would suggest to visit for a young family with teenager or pre-teen kids.
