Authentic Steam Railway linking historic Castlemaine and Maldon. The must do activity for all visitors to central Victoria. You can catch the train for a return trip from either Castlemaine or Maldon stations.

Fun for the whole family as you get up close to a real steam train.

For a touch of class step back in time to the Golden Age of rail travel when the journey was as important as the destination. Travel in luxury parlour cars complete with full bar service. Enjoy the view from the end observation balcony.

Travel with driver for a small extra fare.

You can even drive your own special steam train.

My partner and I travelled in first class from Castlemaine to Maldon and return. The carriages have been beautifully restored. It was lovely sitting in the very comfortable lounge car sipping a glass of sparkling wine and admiring the countryside. We had time in Maldon to look around and enjoy lunch before heading back to Castlemaine. I purchased the tickets... More

Quite expensive for a family. Carriages could do with a clean. Plenty of trees to see on journey but not much else. Maldon wasn't bad. Would also help if parents looked after their kids rather than letting them run riot up and down the carriage!

Great train trip if you love steam trains. Not cheap, but well worth the experience. Also offers themed train trips too that are worth it the trip.

We had a great time on ales on rails, great value, would definitely recommend this trip! The train carriages are beautifully decorated, took us back in time.

Between Castlemaine and Maldon the train makes a whistle-stop halt at a small station labelled Muckleford (about 8km from Castlemaine). There is little to see at Muckleford on a regular day. However, once a year in October Muckleford hosts a one-day festival, the Muck Fest. There's live music, food and drinks and family fun activities. It would be added fun... More

This was my birthday present and took a little while to collect. But worth the wait, we did not know that our visit was in the middle of train track renovations and so we could not travel the whole ride from Castlemaine to Maldon but still had the best time. Travelling first class was great with our own "butler" on... More

Our trip was from the pretty little Victorian town of Maldon to Castlemaine and back and we chose first class and it was a good choice. The carriages have been lovingly restored and were comfortable. The engine changes ends at Maldon so that we were right behind the engine which made life a bit exciting with all the smoke and... More

My second visit within a month or so. The first time was with a large group this time with family as a belated Fathers Day outing. First class is fabulous on any carriage but I especially love the club car! The service is outstanding and it makes the experience very special. You are treated as a VIP. Love it. Worth... More

The seats were comfortable, choice of first class but economy was very good. Bar service and cheese platters were served at a cost and excellent value. The trip was approximately 45 minutes leaving at 10.30 am, the views of the countryside were great. The train returns to Castlemaine in the afternoon or one way is fine. Lovely day out, good... I wanted to get out of Melbourne so got a train from Southern Cross to Castlemaine. The steam trains only run Wednesdays and Sundays. You can use your myki card on the connecting diesel train. I didn't travel half way round the world to not travel first class on the steam train ! They have two ex Pullman coaches which... More
