Amazing Cave Church under the city

This was the second cave church we've seen in France (there aren't very many). This one is under part of the city of St Emilion. The church itself is 5 star. Having to go with a... read more

This was the second cave church we've seen in France (there aren't very many). This one is under part of the city of St Emilion. The church itself is 5 star. Having to go with a guided tour drops it to 4 stars, but alas, the only way to see it is via a tour, as it is privately owned.... More

This was a magnificent church, full of history. The cost to maintain the property is astronomical but hey it's part of the history to maintain the same, beautiful view all around.

Honestly... all the buildings are stunning here but the church was just brilliant - built into the caves of the town and rising up over it all - just splendid!

The information during the tour was well presented. I learned a lot. The construction was an underground wonder.

It is very high and you will be very tired at the top. But the view is incredible. The stairs are narrow and a lot of steps.

Absolutely fascinating tour to do. Book at the tourist office. St. Emilion itself is a stunning town just to wander through and enjoy but this tour gives a deeper insight into the history of this hillside town - thoroughly recommend.

By mining out the inner spaces of the church, digging underground and selling the stone that was mined, the church was paid for with money from the stone sold. And maybe then some, one thinks. In any event, we signed on for a tour that explored the origins of the city and ended with travel through the monolithic church. This... More

The underground church is historic and different. It is not like most churches in Europe with spectacular adornment but its interest lies in its uniqueness. To see a church burrowed underground is fascinating and makes you wonder why and how.

We saw this in combination with St Emilion's hermitage and the old chapel above the hermitage. Hollowing out this church must have been an incredible labor or love for God. The high vaults are incredible--how anyone ever conceived of this idea is beyond me! I loved finding out that stained glass form Notre Dame in Paris was stored here during... More

Sant Emilion is a lovely town to visit, and do go and check the church out ...its is very nice, and a tour with info will add to it.
