About
Dicovering the Morne Brabant - The slave route The Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of the Morne. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary for runaway slaves and is a strong cultural and patrimonial symbol for every Mauritian. Being on private land, Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It includes a multitude of endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutonania, and its red flaming flower. The hike to the summit of Morne Brabant lasts between three and four hours, depending on the homogeneity of the group. Once on top, we discover the breathtaking panoramic views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island.

- Lars B13 contributionsBest experience! This is just amazing, and very stunning! We went with Eric (lagaulette.com) at 4:30 in the morning. We were the first at the top, and Saw the sunrise on the Way. We Can highly recomment going with Eric. He is really Nice - he do not do Big groups, which we loved! He was very attentive and showed us where to put our hands and feets. He til a lot og pictures on the way, and airdeopped it to us. I would NEVER recomment anyone to do this trail without a guide!!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 October 2023
- Stefan B1 contributionHike to the top of le Morne - with Daryeau AdventureWe had a great hike to the top of Le Morne, together with our guide Daryeau from Daryeau Adventure. The guide was really experienced, he knew the best way to get to the top and on the way he also explained the local botanics which were very interesting. Our tour started at 6:30am and lasted roughly until 10am. We reached the top quite early, therefore with less other tourists and could take some great pictures. Most of the other tourist groups we met then on our way back down. Furthermore he also picked us up from the hotel, cheaper than the local taxi offers. We received his number and just contacted him via WhatsApp (+230) 5496 5720, that was really simple. Definitely a top recommendation for smaller groups that want to hike to the top of le morne.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 November 2023

The hike was challenging at times but Prakash allowed us to go at our own pace and was friendly and informative. The views from the peak were incredible and we would recommend making an early start to avoid the heat. Daryeau was punctual and very responsible. He protected my family when we were set on by a pair of dogs. He was very knowledgeable about the area and took us up the mountain safely at a speed which was just nice for us. That was one of the most dangerous experiences in my life. First of all,be ready physically - the way is not easy for people without any special training. I didn’t know about all the difficulties so thanks god I was well trained before in my youth)
The first part of the way is the easiest one: you just go through the forest using the ready road climbing upstairs step by step. We had about 2 or 3 stops for having rest.
The second part is harder: you walk trough small trees and plants by a very thin road and don’t forget you are still climbing up. You need some water with you otherwise it’s better to stop here and turn back.
And my favorite third part of the way was a magnificent check of my ability to survive) we were climbing in a monkey way on the stone rock which is somewhere about 90 degrees. By the way we met one praying place and it was just in time regardless of I have no religion))
The view from the top was amazing but all my thoughts were busy with a question how to go back from there so I couldn’t enjoy the view completely...
The way back was even harder because it’s really not easy to climb as a monkey turning back... Thanks god everybody is alive. I was ready to kiss the ground when we were back))
So please note that this way is really dangerous and scary without any kind of training before. Even with this training it can be scary,I think so. Better not to put yourself on the risk.

We took an island getaway on Mauritius and La Morne was one of musts on our To do list. It was one of the best experiences on the island. We did this hike without a guide and did not have any problems, because the path is easy to follow. For someone in poor/fair hiking condition I will recommend a guide, just because of the last part of the path. Definitely take hiking shoes (specially because of the last part, where you need to climb), some water and sun cream as well. View from the top is stunning and worth some hard work to get to the top!

A must do in Mauritius if you're in decent physical shape (and not too afraid of heights). We hiked to the top in the early morning to benefit from the cooler air. While the path for getting to the top is quite clear (both whether you start from the kitesurf beach or the other access path to the south east), we decided to go with Prakash from Greendiscovery as it was our first time and had gone with him on an incredible hike along the 7 waterfalls in Riviere Noire. We were very glad that he came with us as that morning it was raining on and off and one part of the hike can get very muddy/slippery in a steep couloir where you have to scramble up/down. Particularly for that part, would strongly recommend some good grippy shoes. The rest of the hike went perfectly well and when the clouds cleared out we had stunning views from the very top! Strongly recommend this hike as well as any others that Prakash can take you on (+230 57608367).

I walked up La Morne with Dirk from Yanature. What a fabulous guide, so worth doing it with this company as they add so much....info on flowers, history, birds. Great company . He also helped us when it got tricky as to where to put your feet ( hike was harder than I expected). He also took fabulous photos.....far better than I could have taken.
Rather than struggle on your own book a very professional guide and enjoy the experience with fellow, hikers

Le Mourne climb is a MUST DO in Mauritius, its worth the early start and the effort.
The views are phenomenal to see and , yes photos help you understand, but literally do it no justice. Beautiful!!
Few tips. Book through and use a trusted guide.
Wear APPROPRIATE clothing and shoes.... this is not for flat shoes or light training shoes but, worse, this is not a glamour climb, in your clothing labels, dripping in bling to get a shot for the gram!.
We saw groups of young women (and men) walking up in clothes that you'd see on a night out... but unsurprisingly saw them again an hour later when they couldn't get to the higher points.
Listen to your guide and where and when to walk during the climb. It's not easy but it's not an expert climb, more intermediate level.
If you are taking a drone up there, check with you guide and ask about the helicopter trips that can circle it.... just to be safe!
Last tip, go on a early climb. We started at 6.15 and when coming down, passing the gram-ers , it was already getting hot and around 27 degrees.
I would have hated to be coming down around early lunchtime, like they should have been, in 30 degrees sunshine .
Most of all Enjoy it!

Early morning start 7am with Allan our guide from Local Spirit.
We were a mixed group of 8 and we were treated to local history and plant life talks on the way up the first part of the walk. It was hot and sunny already at this time and lots of shade so this part of the walk was great. I’m a regular walker but not a climber so I did find the next section hard ,no shade there is one section where you are looking for hand and footholds so that was tiring. It is absolutely exhilarating when you reach the top beautiful views. Everyone will have their own experience. I am glad I did it but I needed the help of our guide on the way down the steep part. We were descending after 11 and the rocks are pretty hot by then so scrambling down is hard on your hands. Many people were on their way up then . I’m glad we started early the Mount gets its own cloud forming so there is always a chance you won’t see the view if you start too late.

Climbed at 7 am on a sunday. Only saw 2 other people on our way up. Got to the south west view point and stopped to feed the baby and then came down as the final section is a bit of scrambling and can be slippy when wet so we decided not to risk it with a 6 month old. Saw lots of people ascending on our way down. Took is about 2 hours from trail start and back including the feed. Lovely views, worth it even if you only go that far!

Spectacular! This was on the top of my to do list for Mauritius. And remains one of the top experiences for my whole trip. I decided to go with a guide (despite some online reviews and even local taxi drivers saying it’s not necessary.) I’m a pretty avid hiker but not a scrambler or rock climber so thankful I took a guide. Honestly I would have turned around and not made it to the summit if it were not for my guide. My guide was Nicholas from Wes Aventures (WA: +23054903781) and he got me to the top and down again. I’m in good shape but the combination of the steepness, the exposure and the need to use hands to climb up part had me stuck in a few spots (I’m a little scared of heights so for some this would be no big deal.) The views are worth the effort and the $ to pay a guide. Like others I struggled finding the location - even my hotel and taxi driver (both local) were confused. My hike started near the entry of where there is the kite surfer beach and the construction of the new RUI hotel. Just get specifics and be sure your car/driver is willing to go down the road. It’s really not a bad road at all but brick/cobbled so need to go somewhat slow. I paid 1500rs for the guided hike and gave 300 tip (guide dropped me at my nearby hotel after.) Started at 6:45 and was back at parking at 9:45/10:00. Highly recommend!

Access to the path which leads to the (almost) summit of the hill is chaotic over the last few meters. There are two ways to get there, either by taking the beach road (and luxury hotel) then in front of the stud farm, or by going around the mountain going towards the village of Le Morne then turning right. In any case, you will have to be careful because it is a very wet and uneven dirt road.
Once the road is finished, there is a parking area (which seemed to be guarded when we went there). Access to the site is permitted from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day and people should remember to sign the register before going up so they can know who is still on the hill before they close the gate.
The ascent is done in several stages. First through the forest at the bottom then taking the gently but steadily sloping path up the side of the mountain. Then, after a first view of the mangrove, the surroundings and the underwater waterfall, we continue the ascent on uneven terrain but still easy to access for everyone. Several hundred meters further on begins the more dangerous part (which is also indicated by a sign) where the ascent consists of climbing the mountain on some sort of basalt steps. There is no rope and no safety so you really have to be very careful for this last part which leads to the cross, almost at the summit.
This hike, once you reach the highest point you can go, gives a magnificent view of the bay, the beaches, the forest, the underwater waterfall, the mangrove and the hills of course. We recommend wearing good walking shoes, bringing plenty of water and going early to avoid the heat and crowds. It is not necessary to have a guide but you can always hire one for more information about the hill and the surrounding area. Allow at least 2h30 round trip. A must-see hike on the island on a UNESCO site.

From your experience, can the children ( 11 yo and 8 yo) complete the hike? I am concerning about the safety of the last part of the climbing. The photo looks dangerous.
Written 27 May 2024
In my view too dangerous to take young children up there. Read the history of the mountain. Far too many places for them to fall off. Or be pushed off if messin around as children do.

Но если гид все таки нужен:
Вариант 1 на любом из местных сайтов.
Вариант 2 спросить у любого таксиста, насколько я поняла, большинство из них связано к какой-либо ккомпанией, продающей экскурсии.

Hi, hoping to do this hike in May, how do you get a tour guide? Can you just turn up on the day and book a guide or do you need to book in advance? If so how do you do this? Any advice on hiking in national park and the waterfalls also appreciated! Thank you
Written 21 January 2020
If you have basic hiking experience, you don't really need a guide. Just wear shoes that have good ankle support, and you should be find. If you intend to hike to the top, do consider that the wind picks up in the late afternoon, so best to get started on your hike in the am. Beautiful area and hope you enjoy.
