Absolutely beautiful place to stop. We followed the signs to Washington Irving’s grave and then walked among the many ornate stones. The history there is just amazing. The church is a gem. So glad we stopped in.

Adjacent to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is the Old Dutch Church.
The church is on the National Register of Historical Places, was opened in 1685 and is recognized as the oldest extant church in NY state.
Tours are available although not on the day we were there.

Although it was Halloween season (October) the town Sleepy Hallow had absolutely NO seasonal decorations. The Sleepy Hollow Bridge was not decorated and you would have missed it if you had not been careful. Very disappointing.

Spend 3 hours walking around looking for graves of famous people. Beautiful cemetary. The covered tent had some t shirts and other Sleepy Hollow gifts.

The church and its graveyard are right next to
the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
The church dates back to 1685 and has some very
old graves in the burial grounds
One stone from 1717 was inscribed in Dutch
Worth a visit

Sometimes we forget about the rich history of our nation so close to home. After reading a book that took place in Tarrytown and referencing the headless horseman and the legends of Sleepy Hallow this became an educational trip to bring the story to life.

The fact that the church of such a well known story can accessed so easily makes the Sleepy Hollow stories so much more realistic, because you can say for the scenes that happen in and around the church, "I've been there".

My title is that the church was originally erected in 1697. There are very few standing artifacts in this country that can claim an origination date before the 1700s, so this is quite special.

The old Dutch church was closed on our visit, but we walked the grounds and enjoyed the afternoon. The headless horseman history of the area makes it a spooky spot in any season.

We were in the area and stopped on a whim. While the church itself is a sight to see, the cemetery is worth walking through. There is a lot of history in this place. From the ornate mausoleums to the simple headstones, they all have a story to tell. Washington Irving’s grave is in his family’s plot and very understated.
