Great way to experience the great Adirondacks without trying to climb 46 peaks. Wide well marked trails with water features and tons of wildlife. Fortunately when NY State quit funding Paul Smith's college has taken over maintenance of the area. The Center itself is not open after Columbus Day but the trails are open dawn to dusk. I had hiked Mt. Baker earlier in the day and wanted an easy hike to get more exercise and enjoy fall colors. VIC hiking trails are easy and well maintained with mulch on a lot of them. There are platforms that allow you a higher view of the marsh and distant mountains. There is someone on duty to answer your... More

This was a treat my wife and I stumbled across while visiting the Adirondacks area. We set out on the outer marsh trail that allowed use to see a heron and wood duck.

We arrived at the Visitor Interpretive Center late in the afternoon, so since we really wanted to get some walking in, we didn't spend time in the center itself, but obtained a map of the trails and set off. We picked an easy trail that wasn't too long as the trails close at dusk and it was already after 4... More

Amazing hiking/trail running. The trails are very well maintained and clear of any debris. If you have bad knees these trails are great, they feel like they are cushioned. No really difficult areas to get to, or steep climbing. Great for a family day out.

Lovely, beautiful trails. Went twice during our stay. We kept to relatively easy/flat trails, but there are more challenging ones to try. Great, helpful staff. The Heron Marsh Trail is quite special.

Very knowledgeable guide, Brian, for our hike through the woods and across the bog boardwalk. Learned about the various bug eating plants, foliage, trees, and bog people. Took the shorter, easier hike for me with my leg braces and cane. Looking forward to returning in the fall and then again in winter for cross country skiing.

My wife and I with our three kids (daughters 12 & 21 and son 16) went with the sole purpose of climbing Jenkins Mt. There is ample parking. The staff inside was very helpful with maps and information. There are many activities to enjoy at the VIC even though we didn't take advantage of much. There is an extensive trail... More
