Old Westbury Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the former country estate of John S. Phipps and his wife Margarita Grace Phipps. Opened to the public in 1959 with the mission of preserving a part of Long Island’s heritage, Old Westbury Gardens is an extraordinary example of a gracious era. Built in 1906 by the English designer George A. Crawley, Westbury House is a magnificent country house reflecting English architecture of the late 1600s and early 1700s The house is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts and remains virtually intact from the more than 50 years of the family’s residence. The estate includes over 70 acres of landscaped formal and informal gardens. An additional 160 acres of fields and woodlands surround the estate.

The mansion tour, conducted by an engaging docent, was fascinating, filled with history of the beautiful structure (planning, building, decorating), the magnificent grounds (design, execution, upkeep), and the history of the era (early 1900s through 1950s) and the Phipps family owners (think US Steel fortune...More

This is an excellent place to visit with the family or by yourself. The grounds are well kept and they lend themselves to a perfect photo shoot location.

The artwork (sculptured and carved Jack-o-lanterns) was fantastic but the place is way overcrowded. People are herded like cattle into waiting areas and let loose onto a way overcrowded path lined by the pumpkin art. This places literally could be dangerous if there were ever...More

The mansion and the gardens are outstanding. The gardens are amazing. It was like going into a botanical garden. The Seward Johnson sculptures were still at the garden and this only enhanced the experience. Our docent Ed Nolan was very thorough in his explanation of...More

The sculpures were amazing. So lifelike! The grounds at the gardens are beautiful and the sculptures enhanced the walk around the grounds. Inside the building there were more figures as well as furniture and paintings which are on permanent exhbiition.

The mansion itself is quite beautiful. The rooms are well appointed and maintained. The tour provides an insight into the wealth of the gold coast of Long Island, NY. The grounds are beautifully maintained and it is easy to do a self guided tour.

Old Westbury Gardens are very nice. The grounds are beautiful and the mansion is interesting. However, having traveled the world I was left a little unimpressed.
