Mom and I was staying in santorini for 3 days if vacation after a cruise. We stayed at firastefanie in a cave home with a beautiful view of the caldera and sunset view. So we wonder how the view for sunset would look like in oia. So we took a bus from fira to oia which cost 2 euros per person one way. The bus takes about 25 mins from fira. After we get off it is a short walk to the town. Once we get up there and fund that spot where you see a long line of people lining up to take the picture, you won't miss and is in a alley way on a busy walk way. The line to take the picture you see on the postcard, the line took 1 hr to take the pic. But no regrets and was definitely worth it. Oia has great food and souvenirs to shop at. In oia we had thai food, it was a restaurant near the bus stop.

I saw the sunset in Oia, said to be the most beautiful in the world, from the passage in front of the restaurant next to the classic Oia Castle. I stayed in Fira on Santorini for three nights, so it was about a 30-minute bus ride to Oia. It was cloudy on the first day, and sunny during the day on the second day, but clouds appeared in the evening, so I didn't go to Oia either time, but went to see the sunset on the third day, which was a clear day all day. Even so, there were a few clouds at dusk, but I was impressed that I was able to see a beautiful and wonderful sunset. The sunset was around 8:30 pm, but I went to a spot where I could see the sunset more than an hour before to keep the first row. When the sun set completely, everyone around me cheered and clapped, and I enjoyed the sense of unity that we shared together until the sun set. The contrast between the cityscape dyed in the sunset and the sunset sinking into the sea was really beautiful. On the way back, the bus was crowded, so I hurried back to the bus terminal. The bus ran every 30 minutes until quite late. I think it's important to go to Oia a little early in the evening to get a good spot in the front row. Seeing the most beautiful and amazing sunset in the world has become a wonderful memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

We stayed above Ammoudi Bay and we stayed in Akrotiri. We saw sunsets from every angle and they are all beautiful, whether you are in Oia, Fira, Akrotiri lighthouse or on a sunset cruise. Weirdly they are all very different, the Akrotiri lighthouse had no obstructions, and seemed in a completed different part of the sky to the one we saw above Ammoudi Bay (obviously the same part, but strange how the location makes such a difference). Recommend turning up an hour before sunsets as all locations were very busy. The lanes by Oia leading to Ammoudi Bay were virtually unpassable with sunset watchers. When booking a hotel if you want the best view pick Esperas hotel or one of its neighbours, for the best sunsets and that peaceful view. Restaurants all charge a premium and these are great places to experience the sunset but you may find the food disappointing compare to the size of the bill. Sunset cruises are another good way to see the sunset and boat trips in general are one of the best things to experience on Santorini. Cruise ship passengers who have only a limited time on Santorini would benefit from taking in the sunset from Fira or a short walk up to Immerovigli. Oia is great, but if time is an issue you have all the same white washed houses and beautiful views from Fira, Firostefani and Immerovigli with a great choice of restaurants.

It’s a beautiful town to watch the sunset.
A few watch outs…. It’s extremely busy, so don’t arrive too close to sunset. Any time from around 5pm the car parks start to fill up.
All restaurants / bars facing the sun set have a minimum tariff. We discovered many were €50 -€70 per person minimum (a usual meal would be much cheaper).
Worth considering is getting a picnic and a bottle of wine and finding a spot to watch along a wall somewhere. You have to explore to find them but from the bar we ended up on, there seems to be a hotel and some wide public paths on the sunset side of oia

It's really stunning to see all the white buildings against the backdrop of the water. We stayed here 4 nights. Bring a colorful shirt to take a photo with all the white buildings in the background.
As for the sunset, it gets crowded in the area that everyone seems to head to. The crowds made it much more unenjoyable (as you have to wait a while for the sunset after snagging your viewing spot).
Notes:
- Came April 2023, just before the busy season began, so it wasn't as crowded as usual. Lots of places were busy repainting their establishments white, getting ready for the more busy season.
- If you are driving, be aware that some places are one way and narrow and challenging to navigate with tourists who are not aware of the cars around them.

In one of the most romantic locations in the Aegean Sea, Oia on Santorini is a major tourist destination known for its magical sunsets reflecting off the deep blue sea. The serenity transforms visitors back to a time when demigods explored the seas and fort mythological creatures in the hope their reputation would be remembered for an eternity.
These days, hundreds of Instagrammers flock here every night, hoping to capture the next viral Instagram pic. Almost three millennia later and mere mortals are still trying to stellify their reputation using the modern medium.

Beautiful city, icon of Santorini.
We visited it several times during the holiday and I can say that sunset is the worst time to visit this city.
In the evening, without too many people, walking around Oia with a constant view of the caldera is really fascinating. Unfortunately, however, all the people coming from the cruises will come here to see the sunset so from about 19 to 20:30 you will find the streets completely invaded by people who run to grab a place to be able to take beautiful photos at sunset that, in my personal opinion, is much better seen in Immerovigli and not necessarily in one of the expensive bars in the area.

Oia is a picturesque village located on the island of Santorini, Greece. Known for its stunning sunsets, white-washed buildings, and blue-domed churches, Oia is one of the most iconic and photographed locations in the world. The village is perched on the caldera cliffs, offering sweeping views of the Aegean Sea and the island’s volcanic crater.
Oia's charming streets are lined with boutiques, art galleries, and cafes, and its traditional architecture features narrow streets, blue shutters, and sun-drenched terraces. The town is particularly famous for its sunsets, attracting visitors who gather in the evening to witness the sky turn vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple as the sun sets into the sea.
In addition to its natural beauty, Oia has historical significance, with ancient ruins and traditional Cycladic architecture contributing to its allure. The village has become a popular destination for travellers seeking a romantic getaway, luxury resorts, and breathtaking views.

Can’t go to Santorini and not do this. I guess sunsets are the same everywhere, but the spectacle here is something else. Hoards if tourists throng to Oia, choosing a vantage point so that they can get to see the best view possible add to the atmosphere. All the restaurants here have a special evening price, and are extremely pricey, but it’s the view that is the seller. All topped up by a round of applause when the yellow dot disappears under the horizon.

Trying to pick a spot to view this sunset proved to be rather difficult. There are a lot of tourists attempting to get the perfect view. We did go down the busiest areas to see if we could get a spot but it became too overcrowded.
We ended up walking back towards a church and standing on a wall to see the sun hit the sea, but we were also treat to a bell ringing session so this was an extra positive from our viewpoint.
It is an absolutely marvellous landscape and well worth going in the evening but be prepared for people pushing and shoving to see the beautiful sight.

Sorry, but the disturbing news is that Santorini is currently under lockdown

I guess so. Because it’s open place at the north end of Oia.

Ciao a tutti.
buona vacanza

What are a few rooftop or a little less crowded restaurants you recommend to see the sunset in Oia? TYIA
Written 20 May 2019
There are loads of cafes, but for the sunset they are all full, we waited for an hr in one and had a brilliant view then people came up and stood right in front of us

How do you make a reservation at this Sunset Restaurant? I can’t seem to find street address and phone Number to call ahead?
Written 6 May 2019
It isn't a restaurant, per se. It is an area which has many restaurants, coffee and wine bars.

H tihere. We are thinking of doing this trip next year, 2020 incorporating the Greek Isles. Were you part of a tour group or did you do the islands independantly. If the latter did you find it easy to go from island to island. We are not tour people so would rather travel independantly and stay on the islands we visit for a few nights. Would you recommend this?? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences if you are happy to do that.
Cheers

We actually did both. We were a part of a tour, but pre-planned and added Santorini as a side trip on our own. We came from Mykonos and it was easy to ferry hop to Santorini to stay for a couple of days. (Trip Advisor was a great tool with tips for lodging, transportation, etc.)
I think you should have no problem planning this yourself. Enjoy!

Dove posso parcheggiare a Oia se arrivo in macchina? Potete consigliarmi una zona dove parcheggiare? Grazie
Written 22 June 2018
Arrivata ad Oia, dove inizia l’isola pedonale, devi continuare a percorrere la strada in auto, ovunque trovi spazio puoi parcheggiare gratis e ci sono le stradine laterali che ti portano sulla via pedonale principale
