First, to be clear, there isn't one single place that does spice tours... Instead lots of small farms / people in Kidichi have propped up tours for tourists as demand for these have risen - Beware: most are tourist trap!!! You will likely to be offered a tour in Kidichi every 10 meters in a different 'farm', which is usually a small piece of land managed by one/few families...

Yes, they will show you spice plants you have never seen and the experience could be vaguely interesting (if you would like to spend few hours sniffing/tasting at leaves) but they will try to spill you more money as they can and the overall experience is mediocre at best!

Of all the wonderful places seen on Zanzibar (many for free), this was the only sore disappointment of my trip! I would suggest to avoid this tour until better regulated by the local people (and perhaps made a bit better / more informative!)

But if you desperately want to see this, here some tips:

1. be clear on how much the tour will cost and how long will last at the beginning - if they ask you more than $10-12 pp (which is already a 'tourist' price) they are cheating you A LOT (you can haggle though to lower the price). For large group, definitely ask for a big discount!
2. there is no such a thing of 'community fee/tax' - this is just a way to ask you for more money...
3. do not feel you have to buy product/spices on site - it's not going to be cheaper than buying them in the market / gift shops (Stone town and other villages are plenty of them) - they will just pocket the difference! Stone town market is the cheapest place where to buy spices (if you haggle well)...
4. do agree in advance that the fee you pay include everything - they have sometimes 'helpers' / 'boys' that will probably offer you to drink/eat a coconut or some other fruit - and will ask for a hefty 'tip' afterwards...
5. if you book the tour with an agent, it will cost you more than if you go there by yourself, but it may save you some money at the end... However all the previous apply! Good luck!

I have never been to a Spice Farm before.
The guides that show you around are fun and know a lot about spices. Be aware they are all going to charge you extra tips by the end of the tour.

Zanzibar Spice Garden is something you have to see, feel and taste in Zanzibar. There are many possibilities all around the area, you just have to pick up the right tourist guide. Would like to recommend tourist guide Mohammed Tory that offers a Spice Tour and also other tours for a reasonable price.

You will enjoy in an educational walk through the garden, and taste different exotic fruits and herbs. You will meet with the locals and see their way of life,...There is also a surprise: a Butterfly Man, and Natural Accessories made from the palm leafs. In the end of the tour you can buy original Zanzibar Coffee with Cinnamon. Its a delicious one.
