This is a picture postcard town, great place to see locals bringing in their fish, preparing them and selling on the pier. Plenty of local markets and be prepared to be asked to buy merchandise.... a lot.... just say no thank you and they will move on.

Watch the fishing boats arrive at 11am, the locals prepare the fish and them sell them. There are pleanty of tourist shops and stalls, and just a polite NO THANKYOU is enough for the street sellers.

Walked from Rui Palace which begins through a bit of a wasteland and gets steadily better. Nice beach and pier where local fish are caught. Some good souvenir shop including stuff from Mali. Well worth the walk and get a 4 euro taxi back

As soon as we got off the bus (organised by the hotel) we were met by at least 5 locals trying to sell us things. Having politely said no we were still being followed by one persistent hat seller. Having eventually... More

Lovely walk from Sol Dunas to Santa Maria along the beach passing salt flats. Pity about the litter.

If you are in Santa Maria, you must walk down the coastline and enjoy the beautiful waters. Lay in the sun, swim in the calm ocean, walk barefoot on soft sandy beach... whatever fancies you. Be sure to wear sun block as sun will get to you before you know it. Don't let aggressive salesmen ruin your fun and relaxation...... More

The beach is a great place for a long walk and at this time of the year (early March) is fairly quiet. One side you have the blue sea and, on the other, you're never too far from a wide range of places to eat or get a drink. The busiest part of the beach is around Santa Maria itself,... More
