Yes - a treasure in Newburgh

Been awhile since I was there. Wish they got more publicity. This is a treasure....but I do not always know when exhibition changes. An email list?

This museum is located in a former bank building. There is an eclectic mix of original and copies of handwritten letters and other historical documents. For example, pages from the Gutenberg Bible, Babe Ruth's contract, a letter from Frederick Douglas when he was Ambassador to Haiti, Egyptian hieroglyphics, a page from Narnia and Sherlock Holmes manuscripts. There are even a... More

Have tried several times to visit over the year and found the doors locked. The website and the building advertise regular hours, but apparently the stated hours are not true.

A friend and myself visited the museum to see a current exhibit "Photography as Art" and were not disappointed. Two local photographers had some wonderful photography on exhibit. The real treasure there is the former Mayor of Newburgh, Donald Presutti. He toured us through the museum and was so knowledgeable about the contents and quizzed us on our knowledge as... More

Staff was wonderful and helpful and showed us some great memorabilia. We were less than impressed with the current exhibit; had been there years back when it had a better (we thought) exhibit but the permanent collection on display, while small, is worthwhile viewing.

This museum and library is very nice to visit. However as a professional museum site it is lacking as most of the items are reproductions and not originals. The art displays are pretty installations that are on poster board display racks. Great use of an existing building in a community that needs culture!

Interesting exhibits, beautiful old bank building, always free. Can't go wrong ! Part of a group of museums throughout the country which rotates exhibits.
