On a recent trip north, we made a side trip to a fantastic location, that actually was the first publicly held property that became a Historic Site. Just off the NY Thruway (@ exit 17) and South of I-84, in the quiet town of Newburgh; you'll find the final headquarters of Gen. George Washington, which overlooks the scenic Hudson River... More

I did my research in advance and drove 350 miles on 6/16/16 to arrive in plenty of time for the last tour of the day. I found the house locked up tight. The cashier told me that the docent had to go home, and nobody was covering for her. I toured the museum and found the Director interviewing a possible... More

Includes original house used by GW & 19th c museum with interesting exhibits & artifacts - including a cheveaux de fries pulled out from river bed. An outstanding curator/tour guide, very knowledgeable & happy to chat, answer questions, explain. Site is in excellent condition, well maintained, a bit off the path but well worth the effort.

The 30 minute tour was very interesting - factual and informative with without any fluff. Only $4 fee / $3 for seniors well worth it. Additional building have may artifacts from the era - from guns to coins - to dress to journals etc. etc. Nice grounds and scenery overlooking the Hudson River.

Wear good walking shoes. Wonderful museum and gorgeous, well maintained grounds. Lots of artifacts and history of General George Washington and the Revolutionary War. Statues, buildings, cannons, etc. Excellent day trip.

We liked this stop on our trip up and down the river. It is the first historical home for a parks department in the country (run by NY State). Students take you on a tour every 30 minutes. The walk through and history is very interesting. The view excellent. The museum should not be missed before or after the tour.

The museum and it's house tour guides taught me more than I ever knew about GW. I love the house tour and learned about what life was like in the 1700's. Google maps took us to a wrong location but not far from the correct spot. It wasn't hard to find the site from the wrong spot. This small town... More
