Beautiful murals
Nov. 2019
This was the first monastery we visited (of course, cathedrals are a very different thing), but we were amazed at the similarities of layout, of mural style, etc. The murals are really vivid! You need a good tour guide with you to talk about the importance of some Bible scenes above others, anyone who knows their Bible can identify the murals but perhaps not why these ones are important to this particular monastery.

Interesting Circular Shaped Church
Nov. 2019 • Friends
Took a boat ride on Lake Tana and a short walk in order to reach the church. It was well worth the effort as the church is uniquely shaped (circular) with nice paintings in it. Recommended to visit.

Beautiful Painting
Feb. 2020
This round church with a thatched roof can be reached about 15 min walk from the boat port through path where the vendors selling souvenirs of handcraft along. The interior of this church, like Ura Kidane Mehret on the same peninsula, was decorated with brightly coloured paintings of the biblical stories. Like other churches and monasteries in Ethiopia, the faithful are painted with both eyes, while unfaithful with only one eye. Cover your head with the scarf for ladies, long pants for gents, for courtesy and respect for the local custom.

Unusual and attractive Monastery
Jan. 2020
The Monastery is well worth a visit and the artwork is beautiful and surprising to see in such a remote location. I don't know if it is reachable by land from Bahir Dar, but we took a nice boat ride on Lake Tana to get there.

Amazing monastery
Jan. 2020
This is one of the most amazing monasteries we have visited not only because of the circular shape of the building but also the fabulous pictures/ murals which told so many of the bible stories.

Boat ride to the Monastery
Oct. 2019
We traveled miles/hours across the Peaceful water in a boat where we saw lots of beautiful wild life (crocs, hippos, water lizards, pelicans, Ethiopian Eagles) on Lake Tana to get to Azewa Mariam Monastery situated on a island, where we had to walk 300c along the paths filled with vendors along the route to & from the Century Old Monastery. We had a very good professional tour guide Mr. Temesgen "Teme" whom was very knowledgeable, courteous, and spoke clear English very well; explaining the Biblical stories behind the numerous murals of biblical artwork from the 13th Century; the instruments, and the 3 different areas in which many come to pray/chant/worship at this very interesting, attractive, unique sacred site. Must see.

A most attractive Monastery
Oct. 2019
It would be better to go round the lake shore by car rather the rather long slow boat trip to the peninsular where the monastery is located.
The monastery it's self is very intersting and has a nice feel to it.

Amazing monastry and art work
Dec. 2019
After travelling by boat from Bahir Dar we visited the picturesque island monastry. We had to walk the 850m guantlet of friendly but persistent store sellers but it was certainly worth the visit. The monastry was amazing with remarkable artwork.

excellent

A great place to visit after a trip across the lake and a walk through the jungle. Lots of paintings in the Ethiopian style.

Unfortunately an awful lot of stalls selling souvenirs too.
