Description:

Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family...

Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

Another example of the rich history in this area. Reserve a spot on a tour so you can see the inside of the house, which is just as awesome as the outside.

Our tour guide, Kimberly, made the history of Olana come alive through her anecdotes and encyclopedic knowledge. And every nook and cranny of the house and grounds is filled with examples of Church's vision for his home and the surrounding landscape. The hand-stenciled door panels, the tiles surrounding the fireplace mantels, the collected objects, the furniture, the layout of the... More

Visited friends in the Albany area and decided to see Olana. Make sure to call ahead --even days--to secure a reservation time. Information over the phone is not as clear as it could be. The day was perfect and the views of the Hudson Valley waiting for our tour time were STUNNING. Wandering the expansive property was an enjoyable way... More

Olana is a castle in the clouds - rising above the Hudson River with a magnificent view of the valley and the Catskill mountains. Originally built as the home to Fredrick Church, a proclaimed artist from the Hudson River School, the home is open for tours, and the grounds are perfect for walking the seemingly endless trails.

Just to clarify, admission to the House is by tour only Friday to Sunday, 11-3. If you do go it's a beautiful historical site, perfect for scenic Hudson River views and walking around the grounds.

The view. The house was unavailable as it was off hours. Who cares? The VIEW! Warm October day, my daughter and her friend playing around the slopes and enjoying the view as well. I brought my watercolors and sat in the little garden. Did I mention the view? I would like to return to see works by Frederic Church... by... More

Took both the garden and home tour. Our guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. If you don't have enough time you can wander the grounds and go to the visitor center to watch a film about the history of Olana and Frederick Church. Beautiful setting, interesting architecture and furnishings. I suggest reserving a tour in advance. To think that all... More
