not just a church but also a significant historical site. only thing I don't understand is the convent inside needs at least 2 people to buy the ticket, as a solo visitor, you are not able to get in. really don't get it

Convent is most famous for its trees with cross shaped thorns which are protected from visitors in a fenced in area in the rear. You can, however, buy souvenir thorns in the gift shop. Convent is also noteworthy as the headquarters of Emperor Maximillian in 1867 before his subsequent incarceration here and his death by firing squad at the nearby cerrillo de campana. You can only enter the convent via 25 minute guided tour in Spanish. 20 pesos regular price, 10 pesos for over 60. Lovely square in front of the convent with lots of food stalls and vendors. Combine a visit here with the Aquaducts - both of which of the eastern side of the historic district.

I rarely do this sort of thing, but the blurb about spiny trees growing in the shape of a cross drew me inside. The trees were a disappointment, but the rest was very worthwhile. For a modest entrance fee, you are taken on a twenty minute tour of the convent. A young woman (who was careful to say she was paid only tips :-), was my guide and I was lucky enough to be the only visiter at the moment. I am fairly fluent, but being alone allowed me to ask when I did not understand something, and also to remind her to slow down her professional patter when I had trouble following it. The convent is a mini-lesson into the beautiful and tragic history of the conquest. The building is beautiful. Particularly poignant was the luxurious cell where Maximillian was held for three days before being executed. A very worthwhile thirty minutes and go in even if you don't speak Spanish just for the visual treat. They no doubt speak a little English, I am guessing.

As others have said, the Ex-Convento is full of history. More importantly, it's a beautiful complex of rooms where one can get a sense of how life might have been there hundreds of years. One has to visit Santa Cruz on a tour conducted in Spanish. The tour fee is $20MEX, but teachers and students (with current IDs) get in for half price. The tour lasts less than an hour. For the photographer, there are a number of spots where excellent pictures of the walls, the dome, and ruins can be taken. The plaza in front of the Ex-Convento is very pleasant complete with a modern ground level fountain and cafes for a drink or a bite to eat after touring. At this point, you are also only a couple blocks away from the mirador and a great view of the Queretaro aquaduct "Los Arcos."

Do not miss this amazing site, full of history relevant not only to this region of Mexico, but also connected to the exploration of many areas in the Southwest of the USA (Texas, Arizona, California) and Central America since at the Convent of Santa Cruz was founded a college that prepared during two centuries many of the missionaries that ventured out to found missions, among them the famous friar Junipero Serra. Also, you can visit the cell where the Emperor Maximiliano was held during some days after being captured and prior to his trial and execution. You can also visit during the guided tours. The guides are not too knowledgeable, but nothing that a bit of browsing of the site history prior to the visit cannot solve. The building is wonderful (both convent and church date back to approx. 1640, so that's a more sober architecture than the busy Baroque trend that was about to hit the region). The neighborhood around is very pretty, and there are nice cafes and popular eateries around the spacious plaza right in front of the Convent.

Amazing architecture. Thankfully very well kept. The side chapel is such an spiritual place, it transports you, no matter what religion or creed you follow. On the convent side there is a tree that produces thorns in the shape of a cross and the crosses have tinny thorns that protrude where the nails on Christ's cross. (Hence the name of the convent Holy Cross) In front of the convent there is a plaza with a water fountain and vendors around. a great place to spend the afternoon with the family. The only cons is the drunks on the floor outside on the plaza, hopefully the Town would accommodate for them to be on a safer place.

Good for an evening stroll and if you are lucky , you might catch some concerts or dancers on the plaza. Also the cafes and restaurants are very relaxed and offer decent food.

We toured this church as part of an overall tour of the city and had a chance to wander around. It is beautiful outside with a fountain and small vendors with carts. The inside of the church is lovely adorned in the style of the Spanish churches in gold with statues, paintings and flowers throughout. Our guide told us about some of the legends and the battles that took place there. This is definitely a stop to make on a tour of Queretaro.

A pleasant place to visit, and quite historical, although not one of the most interesting spots in Querétaro. The church, as many are in Mexico, is quite lavish on the inside, but by no means is it the most elegant. The plaza in front is quite spacious, and at any given time there might be vendors selling evening kinds of snacks and foods, religious items, or handcrafted items. There might also be dancing to the beat of drums and flutes as we experienced on our third visit to this plaza in front of the church. Worth a visit, but don't go with sky-high expectations.
