The most!
Recommendations:
1. Arrive at 8 am to climb La Peña, there is a parking lot up to 30 pesos. If you get to that hour you don't die of heat and there are hardly any people.
2. After breakfast in cafe 22 on the plinth. It is local, super accessible prices, just go easy because the service takes time, but it is worth waiting.
3. Walk through the center, there are amazing hats at affordable cost and also gemstones and clothes of local artisans.

Peña de Bernal is one of the most beautiful magical towns and known for the great rocky crag of approximately 300 meters high, being the third largest in the world, where tourists go to relax practicing rock climbing or mountaineering.
This beautiful town is located about 52 kilometers northeast of the city of Santiago de Querétaro, it borders to the south with Ezequiel Montes, San Juan del Río and to the north with the Sierra Gorda, this town of interesting colonial constructions is located on the feet of one of the most striking rocks of the American continent, with vast vegetation between the rocks.
It was formed 65 million years ago in the Jurassic period when a volcanic vent depleted its energy and the lava from inside the volcano together with weather factors formed this rock.
During the spring equinox, the rock receives thousands of tourists looking for an encounter with nature to recharge with energy. At the foot of the rock sits Villa de Bernal, a Magical Town with beautiful portals, cobbled streets with an irregular layout, inns, restaurants, handicrafts, snack stalls, museums and colorful houses, without a doubt a place you should visit.

It doesn't offer much. Souvenirs and merchandise that you could find in any store in Querétaro. It is very expensive, a bottle of wine that I bought at a vineyard here in a restaurant is double or triple the cost. That's why many tourists go just to look, eat gorditas and walk around the center; because of the costs. The few streets in the center are so-so, the rest of the town is dirty.

We conquered La Peña on August 8, 2023! It took us two hours from the ticket booth at the entrance, up to the top, and back to the entrance. My wife and I are fit Boomers but we ate breakfast before we set out, took plenty of breaks going up and down, brought water & snacks, and I wore a hat. We started the climb at 9:00am and it was already getting warm.
We took a mototaxi from our Airbnb to the entrance of La Peña, to save energy, and we took a mototaxi back after we were done, because we were tired. It is possible to walk from town to La Peña and if it was cooler we might have. There are paid public restrooms at the entrance but you need coins. There were no attendants when we arrived but there was toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and the restrooms were clean. Admission to La Peña was $30 pesos per person. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes. My wife wore boots but I wore walking shoes. Step carefully. Wear comfortable clothes. It's a fabulous experience.
After we were done I was hungry so while we waited for our mototaxi to arrive we devoured a pan de queso from the bakery at the end of the driveway to the parking lot, Abril. Delish.

We spent part of an afternoon in this town. It's picturesque, but somewhat touristy. There isn't a lot to do here if you aren't up for climbing the mountain (we were not). We did get some wonderful pan de queso. It comes in many flavors and was like a cheese danish. We also paid a few pesos and took a motorcycle cab up to the terrace/trailhead for the mountain. That was fun in itself - and much nicer than walking up the hill. We did walk down and found it an easy walk back. For comparison, we thought Sierra Gorda's biosphere was a much better day trip. Still, I'm glad we visited this place.

Lovely place in all sense, I was travel with my family and it's incredible how the nature can it be, we spent a couple of days rent Airbnb so that was practical, for me the experience an the favor of local drink "Pulque" was. Unexpected I didn't like the taste but maybe because I don't use to it.
The only thing i recommend it's no trust in the people who tries to learn your future, most of the time it's fake.
I come back sure hehe

Small town with the typical Mexican atmosphere. The center streets are narrow and crowded with shops all over, a lot selling Mexican craftsware. The streets are steep and made of cobble stones, nothing wrong with that but be sure to wear the right shoes.
La Pena, is the rock that you can climb.. it's a 45 minute climb with some some challenging pieces so you need to be reasonably fit to make it to the "top" (by foot you can get about half way I guess). Tip : Go early as the sunrise is very nice when you are up there. Note: there is a charge to climb up. If you go early you still have to pay when you exit so take some money.

This was a strenuous hike on a hot day!! It took me a total of 2 hours up and down with breaks in-between. Though it was hard, I'm glad I made it as close to the top as I could. I found parking close to it and paid $50 pesos and an additional $30 pesos to enter. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, hats, glasses. I made the mistake of not wearing sunscreen or a hat or glasses. At least I had water, even though it wasn't enough. It was fun being the only black person in that whole town at that time. I got lots of stares but I didn't care. I hiked it by myself, probably not a smart thing to do, oh well

We did not have time to actually climb this monolith, but it was fun walking through the city on our way to the base. Very nice, colorful town, and lots of uphill walking just to get to the base. But seeing this old town up close was rewarding, itself, from the busy park, to the quiet back streets, and colorful buildings.

Disappointed! I have visited the Peña de Bernal many times, personally I love climbing up to the chapel, bad enough it seemed that a natural place had stairs, after they started charging you to climb it, still I continued visiting it by the stretch when finishing the stairs, now I do not know the reason but it is closed.
If it is your thing to tour in the village, it is still perfect, if you do not mind climbing steps and nothing else, but if you had reached the chapel where are the best views, Top-rated landscapes and you can take the best photos, forget it!! Personally I wouldn't come back if this wasn't back to the way it was.
