To whom it may concern,
MSC Cruise complaint – MSC Musica 10-14 Dec Pax Janse/Wedenig - Booking number 029457736 - Cabin number 10053
My ordeal started early without realizing it.
A friend told me about this package and that she had a connection at MSC Shay-Leigh Oosthuizen /Moolman. I then asked for a quote, accepted it and paid in full.
This holiday was a surprise gift for my partner. I wanted to treat her to something special.
After making the payment I didn’t speak to Shay-Leigh again until I needed my updated tkt pack resent to me, as I had purchased online a Wifi package and 2 experiences. She didn’t understand what I was asking and I then eventually I contacted your call center. The tone in her reply emails for me as a customer was condescending. And I decided that I would not contact her again. The gentleman I spoke to at the call center that day helped me within 2 seconds and I received the updated tkts pack to print at home while still on the phone with him.
Here I suggested to him, that MSC can help make it easy for passengers by adding a self-help print option without having to ask for a whole new tkt pack again via the call center. Just print the new information. Surely this information will be pulled through to the admin people on board the ship. Far easier I think. Seeing that everything is online these days.
Due to her connection with a mutual friend – I had let the frustration with Shay-Leigh go.
To my disappointment the Turtle experience cancelled 3 days prior to departure. My partner contacted me and asked if I had seen my emails yet?
This is where my complaint starts.
I have been patient throughout this experience and have followed up consistently – MSC Customer service just does not exist.
- On checking with Fumani, she advised that the Turtle beach experience had cancelled. Her email to me dated 7 Dec 2018 didn’t state which of my two experiences had cancelled. So I had to phone in. She then tells me that she had been phoning me. I never received any calls and my phone log can prove it. She knew I was holding to speak to her and that I would be upset. I was met with attitude telling me that my number was wrong. I have checked my booking and have booked excursions online as well. My contact number is correct. Eventually I asked to speak to a manager. Also no alternatives were offered for the cancelled excursion.
- While waiting for a “manager” to contact me I looked up your website contact information for your head office – the head office number shown online was wrong, also there is no platform to log any complaints directly with MSC. Surely you train people on customer service based on client interactions?
- I eventually get through to the H/O receptionist Odette. She was the only one that tried to truly help me resolve this matter. She got a manager to contact me – Johnathan Govender.
o I am not convinced he is in fact a manager
- On speaking with Johnathan Govender, he advised on the refund process which I was not happy about. I mentioned to him of my experience with Fumani and that no alternative was offered. This would help avoid any refunds to be made and help a customer feel that even tough an excursion cancelled and it was out of their control, at least MSC cares by offering an alternative solution. This would be such an easy thing to do for MSC and this would help improve the customer experience by not ruining it completely. Customer Service – back to basics.
o Why is it that you expect payment immediately but refunds take between 10-15 working days?
o I asked Johnathan to keep me informed on this refund process. He advised that he’ll speed things up for me as my departure date was 10 Dec. He advised that I would have received my refund by that Tuesday – I never received anything nor did he ever contact me again.
- I followed up again on the 20th Dec 2018 on my refund several times that day in fact, and was advised that someone would contact me by 5pm.
o Tonderai eventually phoned me. She explained to me the refund process yet again and on asking her when I can expect my refund, she said: 26th Dec but to be on the safe side 27th.
- Today is the 27th December. I have not received my refund. I followed up again and eventually Kagiso in Finance answered his phone. That was the final straw. My patience ran out. Having heard a man answer the phoned sounding disinterred and fast asleep. I advised him that I would not repeat my story again and that he should speak to Tonderai about my refund.
o I phoned the receptionist back to advise her that I’ve asked Tonderai to contact me and that I would now be sending my official complaint through via social media.

The only thing we enjoyed about our cruise holiday after spending so much money was the one remaining excursion that had not been cancelled – the Quad biking on Pomone. I guess it was more because we were off the ship.
This was my partner’s first experience cruising – she told me that it was also her last. I planned a beautiful holiday to Mozambique where we didn’t need to drive – just enjoy each moment. Relax.
Unfortunately the below list ruined the experience completely.
Our cruise experience complaint list:
- Long queues and slow service while boarding – everyone in the queue was complaining about this.
- Save your money MSC – just play lively music though a sound system. The one man band grated my remaining nerve.
- We found my partners’ unattended luggage standing in the middle of a passage – we just happen to pass it while exploring the ship.
- Being harassed to buy drinks packages after boarding the ship by staff.
- Never-ending queues and total chaos.
- Visiting the customer desk repeatedly during the cruise and being given conflicting information.
- Connecting to the Wifi package was a nightmare – however the blond lady that assisted us was the only friendly face there and successfully resolved the connection problem.
- People were sick for the first 2 days of the cruise including a friend of mine and my partner.
- All excursions cancelled for the first day – suddenly a ship full of angry ppl with nothing to do
- Passengers getting sick in public area and agro staff dotted the landscape.
- Pungent stench in the passages of sewerage, urine and stale air was nauseating.
- The toilet in our cabin on the last night of the cruise – stopped working. However after phoning help desk this was resolved.
Expected result – I want my refund immediately.
Went through a range of emotions – anger being the biggest one. This cruise was a gift to my partner. This was her first and last cruise. The experience has been shocking. You spend so much money on a holiday that is meant to be magical – cherished memories….
The number of ppl that used Self Assist to get off the ship – spoke volumes. Everyone we spoke to while waiting to exit the ship had the same complaints. How many will actually voice their complaints we don’t know.
Hear my voice.
I have advised everyone that I had spoken to with regards to this matter – that the way in which they resolve this issue will determine the severity of my complaint. My patience has run out.
I have shared my experience with so many people, friends and family already.
I was warned about MSC, but I didn’t listen. The optimist in me had said “surely it’s not that bad, I’ve cruised before”.
I personally have cruised with Royal Caribbean before, such an amazing experience. I expected the same from MSC, but after my experience would not recommend MSC cruises.
Again expected outcome - I want my refund immediately.
Awaiting your soonest reply in the matter.

We went on our first cruise with the MSC Sinfonia. It was a three night cruise leaving Durban Harbour on Friday 18th November and returning Monday morning 21st November.

Prior to going on the cruise we weren't sure what to expect but ended up totally enjoying it from start to finish.

The embankment process was smooth as we used a tip to avoid the long ques, see below.

Once on the ship, all staff were totally helpfull and knowledgeable. We had absolutely zero issues when asking questions and or for help.

The food in the buffet restaurants and the dinner resturants were perfectly acceptable, however the pizza in the convenience areas could be good or average. The burgers, chicken or beef, were good quality in the convenience areas. The ice cream was superb, unfortunately there is just one counter serving it, so expect a little que.

The entertainment team on board really are superb in getting everyone in the party mood. They had endless energy and were all super talented. I must mention Wally, Oscar and Kevin, they really are awesome. The girls, Chloe, Samantha were really helpful.

There is always something to do, a show, a game on the pool deck or even just relaxing in one of the bars listening to music is a winner.

If u have kids, they have a couple of kids clubs and they are totally entertained.

The themed party evenings are a total blast, just get in the spirit and do it. Fun for young and old.

Our trip included a visit to the island. Totally worth it, just do it.

All in all we had a great holiday and will be going again soon.

HOT TIPS :

don't feel the need to que at the Harbour from 7am, you are just wasting ur time as the passengers from the previous cruise only start leaving the ship then. Arrive about 10 am and you will be on the ship by 1130 am guaranteed.

Do buy prepaid drink vouchers prior to cruise as if you don't have vouchers, EVERY, drinks transaction has 15% tip added to it.

DON'T bother buying a water package as there are many water stations available for u to drink water should you need to.

DONT bother buying a coffee package as there are coffee and tea stations available 24 hours. Also if you really need a speciality coffee fix u could buy a cappuccino with any of the drinks vouchers.

Do Stick to times of shows, events etc the ship works like clockwork,so being 15 mins late, you might not get into the theatre for the show.

Trying to use the lifts all the time ends in alot of waiting, use the stairs as 8 lifts with 3000 people on board.... Do the maths

If you're not much of a "drinker" then an MSC cruise is EXTREMELY well priced. A single rate for all accommodation and all meals (excluding drinks) -
FOUR MUST KNOW TIPS when traveling on the MSC ships:
1. Take your own camera (their photos are expensive)
2. Buy the drinks vouchers (not only for alcohol, also available for water, sodas, ice creams and coffees... it saves you a bit of money)
3. DO NOT pre-book any onboard activities, they run specials on all activities (such as Spa, etc) as your cruise goes by. Prebooking means that you pay the full price.
4. Check the weather forecast before you book your cruise (which is not always easy if you book in advance, in that case check historical data for that time of year) - adverse weather conditions means that they will divert you from Portuguese Islands to Maputo (which is also OK)
-
Otherwise, MSC Cruises are absolutely amazing to go on. Being out in the ocean means you are cut off from cellphones and internet (although internet IS available at a hefty price) which means true relaxation. You get to meet new people, have a party and all at a very reasonable price.

Pleasantly surprised by a cruise holiday.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when booking a cruise on the MSC Sinofina

Coffee and water is available all day – no need to buy vouchers.
Embarking is a lengthy process but disembarkation is very quick and easy.
Disembarkation is VERY EARLY, (Between 06h00 and 07h30 and not optional to stay later on the boat)
When doing an excursion, get your number early as you can wait 4 hours to leave the boat if you are on the later trips.
Don’t drink the water in the cabin without knowing you will be charged for it.
If you are booked for a dinner seating, be there on time. If you are late – they don’t let you in.
Ubering from the cruise is much cheaper than the taxis but the taxis are plentiful
Don’t lose your cruise card, anyone can purchase on it if they find it (happened to someone in my party)
If travelling with Children – You must have unabridged birth certificate and a letter from the parent if not travelling with you.
If travelling with kids – use the kids club – they have so much fun there and its open till 22h30 every night.

My wife and I booked for a cruise on the MSC Opera on the 29th November to 02 December 2013, from Durban to Portuguese Island and back. This was an absolute dream holiday, the rooms were always super clean, the staff very friendly, the food excellent. There was loads of entertainment for people of all ages. This was a great break away from regular life. We both wish we could spend forever on the Portuguese Island, it was just perfect. When on the island we would suggest book the exclusive beach lounge, we had our own beach loungers with a small table and umbrella for shade, this was in a quadrant area that was only accessible to those of us that booked it in advance. Luck was on our side because we had the perfect weather for the whole duration of the cruise. We are already looking forward to planning our next cruise.

First-time cruise experience - generally, for the price, it is a worthwhile 5 days/4 nights trip. Some comments:

1. If you're going to fly to DBN then book your shuttle transfer beforehand. Busses departed every 45 min. The process was extremely efficient with a lot of guidance and helpful staff to make it painless
2. Priority boarding definitely recommended. But, ultimately you end up in the same queue after all formalities (security, customs) and the boarding was a painful 30 min wait in the sun. Be prepared to just go with the flow - your priority adds no extra comfort when the ship security process takes over.
3. Cabins in the back had a more pronounced sound and vibration from the engines. Middle and towards the front of the ship recommended
4. Pre-purchased drinks vouchers only of value if you're going to have cocktails (and ice-cream). The rest of the drinks are in USD and the beers are 'buy 4, get 1 free'. At the time of our cruise the cost for beers was dependent on whether still in SA-waters. Be on about $3 for a beer or bottle of water
5. The theatre shows were mostly a let-down but mainly because they don't use a live band. Other live entertainment in lounges, especially when not using backtracks, was great
6. No matter where you go in the world, the 'booking' of loungers and tables is a constant. No different here but if you're patient and flexible you'll always have a spot to camp out at
7. Our trip was diverted to the Portuguese Islands because we could not reach Pomene due to weather. Thus spent 2 days at anchor. Expect to be herded to tenders in groups which are called in order of receiving your transfer 'voucher'. You may as well go get one early so you're not waiting until 12 for the island-transfer. In relatively rough seas expect to be soaking wet after your approx 15 min transfer
8. The island is relatively well provisioned though. Expect to queue for bars, lack of seating and queues for bathrooms though. However, if you've never been there before it has to be done, just for the experience
9. Despite other comments, men are allowed to dine with shorts, closed shoes (think tekkies) and we'd recommend a collared shirt so as not to look like a commoner. We did wear chinos on the one evening - don't take a suit, just dress business smart-casual
10. Entertainment on-deck in the afternoons are always fun - don't miss out on the quizzes
11. Smoking areas are well demarcated and entirely sufficient (including the cigar lounge on deck 7 which always had a spot or two to have a seat, if you're so inclined to be inside)
12. Disembarkation is extremely efficient. If you're taking the transfer (which is at cost and must be booked at Reception during the day before arriving back at port) you'll receive priority. In our experience we were disembarked at 06:45 and were at the airport by 07:45. We even moved our flight forward to the 08:45 departure when we got to the airport. Wouldn't however bet on that so had originally booked the 12 o'clock to JHB
13. The food was plentiful but mostly mediocre. Don't expect 5* stuff here - they're preparing 10,000 meals a day
14. Sea-sickness tablets weren't necessary even in rather rough seas but take some Stugeron with you just in case (it made us drowsy on day 1 so stopped taking it)
15. Wi-Fi was 'okay' and the 1GB we bought before-hand was sufficient to check-in with your peeps at home or deal with flight bookings
16. You're with 4000 people, so expect you need patience and a little bit of understanding. However, never felt crowded or claustrophobic

All in all, the MSC Musica is a lovely ship and it's a great experience if you take the time to wind down and relax.

Our first cruise ever.

Months of planning, organization and excitement.. All for a holiday I would have enjoyed more had I spent it at home.

The embarkation process took ages, which was expected. When we finally got on the ship it was pretty much chaos. Staff restocking bars, hallways strewn with empty plates of food and this constant lingering smell if urine as far as you walk on deck 9. To my surprise this same smelled lingered for the entire trip. The carpet by the elevator on deck nine was basically wet and stained for as long as we were on the boat.

When we were eventually able to get some drinks from the bar it was over crowded and the bar staff were rude and abrupt.

The food on deck 11 was atrocious! So was the coffee, when it eventually became available.

Unfortunately the staff in both restaurants on deck 5 and 6 were so unhelpful that we were unable to be seated for both dinner and breakfast on every occasion we attempted to attend a meal. The one morning me and my son were walking around for over 45 minutes looking for and trying to find a table to have breakfast. The waiter who eventually bothered to respond when I asked for assistance grumbled something incoherent and carried on changing table settings. This resulted in us having to have every meal in the buffet restaurant on deck 11. This restaurant had the lowest quality of food and service I have ever had the pleasure of being forced to eat. On 2 mornings they simply turned people out saying that there was no food left.

The staff that had to assist with the disembarkment on to the Portugese Island were rude and nasty. Shouting often and having no regard for any of the passengers.

Having to pay for the excursion snorkeling you'd expect to get what your money was spent on. Instead one of the 2 boats transferring travelers broke down due to engine failure in the middle of the trip back. Leaving us sitting in the boiling sun waiting for rescue boats to come assist.

The spa on the boat is a joke. All they are interested in is making money. I honestly expected something a bit more upscale considering the prices they charged. Ultimately you get a massage bed in what looks like an outdated old doctor's room.

Ultimately this cruise was a rip off. The amount of money spent for this non event is ridiculous compared to what you actually get.

This was our second trip on the MSC SINFONIA cruise ship departing Durban and stopping off at the Portuguese Island. We booked the themed Bhangra Cruise, departing 24th March and returning 27th March.

I would like to share some tips and advice that I have picked up over the last two cruises so that future cruisers ( is that even a word :) can have a great time

1. Embarkation: all travel agents tell u to arrive as early as possible, blah blah blah. You honestly have until 1230 to get onto the boat. So relax take ur time. If you attempt to be first in the que and want to be at the Harbour standing in the que, u would have to leave the airport or your home if u reside in kzn somewhere at sparrows fart to miss all the traffic. Then when u arrive at 7am, u sit or stand until about 930 before u start the embarkation process....

2.immigration and MSC Clearance: don't bother buying the "easy on board pass" as this only allows you to skip the que at the MSC documentation check desks. It does not put you ahead of the customs que. You que to go through customs just like the rest of us.

3.Families with children: please bring the correct paper work, so if u bring kids, friends kids, kids under 18 you need the birth certificate, parents permission etc. Customs doesn't budge no matter how much you tell immigration you didn't know, the travel agent didn't tell me etc....like for any travel the responsibly is on YOU the traveller

4.Disembark: the ship would obviously want you to get off the ship as quick as possible on the last morning for obvious reasons. However you have more than enough time to get up at a reasonable hour, 630, have a shower and still enjoy breakfast before getting off the ship. No need to rush. Also settling you bill the night before will also save you standing in another line early in the morning. Just keep a drinks voucher or three if u want a nice coffee before departure

5.Drinks and bar service: highly recommend to pre purchase drinks vouchers. They are cheaper prior to getting onto the ship. Also u are charged 15% service fee for every transaction you make on board. With vouchers there is no additional charge.

6.Staff: there are from many different countries of the world that try to make ur cruise great. As much as they are foreigners to you, so are you to them. When communicating with them speak clearly, slowly as some of the staffs English is not what the queen would expect. Remember it's not the barmans fault that you are number twenty in the que to order a drink....

7.Food: as much as the cruise ships advertise that it's "gourmet" food etc etc it really isn't. The main dining for most guests will be the buffet restaurant, and quite frankly, a buffet in New York, Paris, Rome or Boksburg and on the ship is the same mass production of average meals to feed the masses...don't expect there to anything that makes ur taste buds go wow...however the food is more than edible. There are also specialty restaurants for dinners and you are allocated a seating everynight. This is more of a formal setting with fancy named food, which is sometimes great or average. The other major down side is the portions are tiny. There is also pizza available during the day and also burgers, hotdogs and fried chips

8.Shopping and fotos: there are many shops that try to sell you duty free stuff like watches, perfume, Johnny Walker etc... Quite frankly if you on the cruise to buy stuff u can really get at any edgars or liquor city, not sure why u on the ship...specials are few and far between... Rather waste....mmm...I mean spend you money on MSC souvenirs, like and nice jacket, or a Lego set of the ship or a fridge magnet. With regards to fotos, don't buy them on the first night as all fotos go on special in the last night... Why....coz they would rather sell them at a discount....coz they don't keep them... They burn them once u leave the ship...duh...

9.Shows and Timing: All the shows/events / activities are worth attending. They are top quality. One word of warning, the ships timing is like clockwork. If the advertised show start time is 1600, it starts at 1600 with one person present or a full theatre....no Africa time on board

10. Island stop: unfortunately the weather doesn't always play it's part at sea. So sometimes it's not possible to get to the island for safety reasons. Accept it and get involved in the other activities that are planned on board.

TIPS FOR MY INDIAN FRIENDS

Some things NOT TO EXPECT when on a cruise, even though it's a so called BHANGRA BOAT CRUISE.

1. There won't be chicken, mutton, veg curry or breyani available for breakfast lunch or supper. When there is curry available, don't expect to get options of, hot, mild or super hot. Remember mass produced buffet food is the order of the day. So bring ur own chillies, pickle etc

2. The activities / entertainment that are planned on the boat on the pool decks and clubs are of such a nature for you to get involved in, dance, act silly have fun on holiday....not for you to drag chairs into the entertainment area and make it smaller so people enjoying themselves have to move around you.

3. Respect show times: there were themed shows arranged where by colour coded tickets with time slots allocated. The reason for this is so that all people can enjoy the show relaxed and in comfort. When people arrive for a 2pm show and their ticket says 4pm and u just barge into the venue and take up space you are just being selfish and not being clever. Don't you think you should respect the fact that times were allocated for a reason to accommodate all persons....how would you feel if u were refused access to the event. Also remember people plan their activities on a cruise, so if the planned attendance of a 2pm show is missed they can't just always attend the next show because maybe they have another activity planned....

We travelled from Durban to the Portuguese Islands on the long weekend of 21 March. It was an awesome and memorable experience, my first cruise and I'm hooked ! The ship is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Our cabin had an ocean view and we were lucky to be located next to the deck 8 so we had access to a beautiful sea view literally two steps from our cabin (8266) . There is more than enough food ranging from buffet breakfasts to pizza and burgers all day. The dinners are very small portions though - we had dinner at La Caravella - the service is excellent and attentive but you may not be satisfied and still have space for the pizza which is available until midnight on deck 11. There are great cocktails and ice cream desserts to try as well. I loved the shopping arcade ( Via Condotti ) and the public lounges which are beautifully decorated. The most relaxing thing is just enjoying the view of the sunrise and sunset on the sea and the sound of the waves. Its incredibly relaxing. There is good entertainment on board although on the third night there wasn't anything spectacular about the entertainment because of the theme - just check online at MSC if there if it is a themed cruise before you book. Also take note that on the final day (disembarkation) you have to leave your cabin at 6am and leave the ship well before 7am so its rather inconvenient. The trip to Portuguese Island is lovely and relaxing. Make sure you carry slops, a hat and sunblock as it gets really hot. The transfer o the island is rather bumpy but fun. I found that the organisation of the transfer was not well explained. Generally however there's a good use of English and you are able to communicate well with most staff. The Aurea Spa is highly recommended! We had the Balinese massage (59 dollars for 45 minutes plus a 15% service charge) it was totally relaxing the spa is located on the upper deck as well so you have a beautiful sea view to enjoy . Overall its an amazing cruise and is highly recommended.

We were very excited for our cruise on the MSC Musica from Durban to Pomene mid February 2019. We were diverted last minute to the Portuguese Islands. Having read a couple of posts from various forums and people, I still had some unanswered questions as to what to expect and what to take along. I decided to post some here.

1. Don't buy the water vouchers, it's expensive and water are always available in the buffet area.

2. I regret having bought drinks vouchers.
Despite the 15% saving upfront, I don't think it's worth it. It definitely would've worked out cheaper if we just bought drinks on the ship and charged it to our room. We ended up coming back with bottles of wine and tins of soda not used on the ship (most expensive drinks ever).

3. We spoke to a couple of people who carried on alcohol in their suitcases, doesn't sound like all suitcases are searched....

4. On-boarding was painless and not such a long wait as we expected. No need to pay for priority boarding.

5. Our ship was diverted from Pomene to the Portuguese Islands due to weather conditions. There are lots of shade and fairly comfortable chairs to laze around. No need to book a lounger and umbrella, although it was nice to have a seperate spot where you could sleep. Decide for yourself if $23 per person is worth it (my personal opinion is the exclusive lounger isn't worth it for $10 more).

6. Put lots of sunscreen. If you think you've put enough, just put some more. Motion sickness, sunburn and sunstroke together is a bad combination!

7. You can get complimentary motion sickness tablets on the boat! Just ask at reception.

8. Don't bargain on a captains dinner, we never had one. And your tuxedo / evening wear will come back unused. Dress throughout the cruise was casual, although some people still dressed up every night.

9. The gym is small and very busy! Be there well before they open and prepare yourself to wait for equipment.

10. Shopping (duty free) on board is real. Save up! The perfume was almost 40% cheaper than in South Africa! There are different savings every day on everything from jewelry to perfume to handbags.
