- gkowalczykNazareth, Pennsylvania77 contributionsSpecial Visit to Glenn H. Curtiss MuseumStaying at local Bed & Breakfast, the Curtiss museum was one of the recommendations of the host. So glad we followed their advice to check it out. A truly amazing experience on the history of engines and aviation. One of the local volunteers hooked up with us about halfway through museum for personalized tour. We really enjoyed all the history represented in the museum.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2024

Housing a variety of items from bicycles, motorcycles, planes, even a couple of boats. Many motors on display. Was on our way out of the Finger Lakes/Watkins Glen area and had to stop. Everything on one floor. Easily accessible. Gift shop - get your 'fastest man on earth' shirt as a souvenir. Even provides local history of the area.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024
- Jack L7 contributionsA short time from the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers were ahead about three years Glenn Curtiss, however the Brothers didn't disclose what the Brothers were about, while Glenn Curtiss worked with other people and allowed his ideas to be used. After the entrance is the lobby, front desk, admission and the gift shop. Once passing the lobby is the Bike Shop, Bicycles, Motorcycles & Curtiss Automobiles (3). Here is where model aircraft start by planes, seaplanes and trainers. Above the ceiling are at least 14 model. At least 13 vehicles from 1916 to the 50's. There are motorcycles for the 1920's to around the 1950's. Another Curtiss item was the 1938 Curtiss Aerocar automobile which was eight passengers. The restroom is next to the Glenn Curtiss Theater. Also is the Coat Room, a Noisy Area and a Emergency Exit. There is a Restoration Shop to rebuild airplanes- one is a P-40E which is 3/4 size, a 1930's speedboat and two seaplanes that have flown from 1912 and 1919. There is one seaplane aircraft-the 1917 American-that was to fly one weekend however the plane could fly on Keuke Lake, the engines were not enough powerful to fly. One year later the engines were powerful to fly 100 yards from the ground. My visit was 3 1/2 hours. The museum is south of Geneva, New York. Start on R14 south for south for about 14 miles. Turn Right onto R54 , keeping toward Penn Yao south. Turn Left on R54, then turn Right South for 25-26 miles. After the miles pass South a traffic light, with a large Curtiss cargo plane, turn Right with the museum onto a gravel driveway. I learned that using a GPS unit was the best way for get to the museum. I recommend about two hours.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 23 August 2024

Great museum! Fantastic displays showing Glenn Curtiss' migration from making bicycles to motorcycles, to airplanes. Also old cars and motorcycles on display. Loved the special Snoopy and the Red Baron exhibit.

Mu husband has wanted to go here wince he read about Glenn Curtiss a few years ago. It did not disappoint. The displays are very well done and the bikes and planes are really a marvel. You need at least 2 hours here, so take your time. The museum is more than plane, bikes and motor bikes though, it's a real testament to the major contributions of 20th century ingenuity that came out of Central New York and the Finger Lakes Region. Only real negative was that no volunteers were working in the workshops, which we would have love to see.

This is a hidden gem. Watching the film is a must and we found it beneficial to watch before touring the museum. The film is an hour long and worth every minute. We were surprised to find Curtiss being more the founder of aviation than the Wright brothers. Curtiss is already known as the “Father of Naval Aviation.” Actual motorcycles he rode, as well as, originals and exact replicas of the planes are on display. Classic automobiles are also on display. One of the people in our party rides a scooter, and found this museum to be fully accessible. We highly recommend visiting this museum.

This museum is small and filled with articles from the life of Glenn Curtiss. I would say that around 40% of the museum articles are antiques not pertaining to aircraft or flying. Should take about 1-1.5 hours to look at. Very nice building and well kept.

Previously we didn't know who Glenn H. Curtiss was until our friend took him to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. It turns out that Glenn H. Curtiss is one of the pioneers of American aviation. Glenn H. Curtiss is a genius and self-taught in aeronautical science. The museum has many historical items such as bicycles, motorbikes, cars and a collection of airplanes. in the museum, there are also remains of planes that played a role in WW 2

Happy that the museum was open on a Sunday afternoon. One hour video on Glenn Curtiss is a must-see it before you go through the museum. Wright brothers seemed to get most of the fame, but unbelievable what Curtiss did with motorcycles and then the future of aviation. Actual vintage bicycles, motorcycles, numerous airplanes, engines and some beautiful autos. Some donated and some on loan! Clean rest rooms, kids play area, nice gift shop. Great history of a local and national hero. His unadorned tombstone in nearby Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Excellently presented museum of early aviation. Surprised to learn that Mr. Curtis attained flight before Wright Brothers! Also that he held a land speed record that held for many years and did it on one of his motorcycle’s! It’s also a great motorcycle museum. I also enjoyed the numerous antique cars. Unfortunately my wife was bored out of her mind.

Glad we planned this stop on our way to Watkins Glen race week. Great history in this museum. From the earliest bicycle designs to the constant upgrades of motorcycles(fastest man on earth) and, of course, aircraft. This museum is very informative, and the layout lets you go freely to all exhibits. So much to see and read up on my wife, and I agreed that this is more than a one-time stop, we will be visiting this museum every year for many to come.

Glenn Hammond Curtiss was a racer, engine expert and aviation pioneer. The museum has collections of bicycles, antique motorcycles and automobiles and various Curtiss and war planes. There are also plane engines, a hands-on children's area and a small area devoted to the history of Hammondsport. A documentary 63 minute video is a good introduction. Browse the gift shop for aviation related books and much more
