The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York. Housed in the 1833 neo-classical Arnot family mansion, it is one of the last remaining private art collections formed in the 19th century still exhibited in its original showcase. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from museums around the world.

Since I was in grade school, a million years ago, I have always enjoyed visiting the Arnot Art Museum. The structure in itself is breathtaking, but the art is beyond description. If you want to get lost in a painting, imagine living at that time,...More

Small, well kept museum with eclectic collection. Hudson Valley school of painting room, set of 35-40 oils from 1630 to early 1900's, small group of modern paintings and Asian & egyptian artifacts & paintings. $5 for seniors.

A friend and I took about an hour and a half and slowly walked through the entire museum picture by picture. Lots of beautiful art and nicely displayed. Very clean and quiet – we were the only ones in the museum I think. The docent...More

….that a small town in up-State New York should not only have a museum, but one with works of art that are worth making a journey for. One of the few very early purpose-built picture galleries to survive architecturally and survive with the original contents,...More

Nice little museum in the downtown area. No big masters but very interesting eclectic collection. Located in the Arnot family house which is very interesting in itself. On thing I was sorry about was I missed the Hudson River collection as they had just rotated...More

The primary attraction for us to visit the Arnot Museum was the 75th annual regional art exhibit in which artists exclusively from western New York had their judged works on display. As inveterate museum goers, we were quite impressed with the quality and variety of...More

Although not a huge museum, the Arnot has a lovely collection of art. We were greeted warmly at the reception desk and the young lady even spent a few minutes with us, telling us about various pieces in the museum.

One of the great small museums in upstate New York. Arnot often offers great temporary exhibitions but the anchor is the superb permanent collection -- specializes in American Art masters but there's an impressive European selection as well. Not many places this size where you...More
