You probably won't be bothered by the crowds at the museum, but the details make it an interesting experience. Knowing some of the local history might be of benefit to fully appreciate some of the items. Located in an old bank building, some of the bank and office details have been lift intact. Worth some time spent well.

With limited time in Elmira and a huge interest in Mark Twain, we took the Trolley Tour of Elmira which starts at the Chemung Valley History Museum. The museum is small, but inexpensive. The Trolley tour was only$4 each! The host of the Trolley Tour is from the area and was excellent! We really enjoyed seeing the Mark Twain study... More

The Chemung Valley History Museum is the jumping off point for the Trolley tour into Mark Twain Country. The museum itself is quite unpretentious, but offers some insights into the life of Mark Twain at his summer residence where he did much of his writing.

We took part in the wonderful Twain Trolley tour then checked out the museum. Very well put together. We learned a lot! It is a small kid friendly and interactive museum. If you are in the area...check it out and do the Twain Trolley Tour!

A great little museum with some really interesting exhibits on show. Elmira has more history that you would think and really should promote this more. Mark Twain, the Langdon family and one of the deadliest Civil War POW camps. You could easily fill a couple of days here. The trolley bus also leaves from in front of the museum and... More

The museum is housed in a old bank building; which in itself is very interesting. The old vault and infrastructure is pretty much all intact. For the architecture alone its worth seeing. But the museum charges a small fee ($5 for seniors...) and is very reasonably priced. It offers a glimpse of the history of Elmira, including Native Americans, immigrants... More

You have seen at least a dozen of these museums: depicting a pioneer town that grew into a locally important town which is now in serious decline. The time of fame for Elmira was during the civil war and for 50 years on (including Mark Twain's stay here when he wrote some of his most famous novels); today it looks... More

Wonderful place to learn about a place that I moved to. The "docents" were very informative and shared some personal stories.

This is a small, volunteer-run museum located near the center of downtown Elmira. The front of the building is an ex-bank, and the structure has several historically significant features. The museum itself is relatively small, but has a surprisingly good collection of local artifacts, which are well presented and explained. The displays are laid out in chronological order and do... As a former resident of Elmira, I was curious to visit the museum to see how well the history of the area was documented and displayed. The museum is lovely, well laid out and definitely worth a visit! The Samuel L. Clemens / Mark Twain artifacts are great.
