Great place to teach kids about historic whaling.

I've been here numerous times. The museum is small, but is the only place I know of where kids (and adults) can learn about whaling. They have some beautiful pieces of scrimshaw.

We have been there twice. The first time the volunteer was so interesting and had us all spellbound. So a couple of years we took more visitors to this Long Island Museum about the Whaling industry on Long Island and the volunteer was totally uninformed about the subject. I do not like to be negative and can only hope it... More

This place is a nice place to learn about how harsh whaling was. We stopped here right after we ate lunch at the sandbar. Once we entered it I saw a lot of crimshaw. The guy with the information was telling us all about it and was very informative. Later, we saw a 21 minute film which was filmed in... More

We went here for my son's friend's Birthday party. The kids were all between 4-5 and a few 2 year olds. This is such a cute little place with a lot of exploring to do for the kids. The people working here are knowledgeable and friendly. My kids favorite place was the area with the bunk beds. They kept hiding... More

Great place for a quick visit on a rainy summer afternoon with kids. A lot of really cool stuff and a fun interactive kids play section. However, the place could use updating. Some the curatorial information did not seem current and would benefit from seeming like a professional museum as far as it installations. That said, it is a gem... More

Thanks so much for posting your review from the summer here. You were right -- our galleries did need an update! The good news is we just reopened with brand-new exhibits. We'd love it if you might be able to visit us again, and we'd be happy to offer complimentary admission (please email ndayan@cshwhalingmuseum.org). Hope to 'sea' you soon! More

Located in the heart of town. Interesting history of whaling and how it was part of Long Island. Very educational displays. If traffic is light, ask them to play the 11 min. video. Without the video, allow 1 hour. Street parking.

Took my visiting grandchildren to this museum. The displays were well done and easily viewed by children and provided information of interest to adults. This little museum is a hidden gem.

Used our local library pass for free admission today with my family. Even though I didn’t pay a nickel to get in to the museum, I still left feeling a little disappointed. The museum is very small and feels cluttered with loose artifacts tat themselves are pretty interesting. It’s filled with scrimshaw (carved whale bone items) a few boats, a... More

Very interesting museum with lots of information. It's quite small so when there are a lot of people there its quite hard to concentrate and read the exhibits. There are souvenirs you can purchase to remember your visit. I enjoyed visiting and learnt some new things.

The museum is only about one hundred yards from the shops and cafes on Main Street . With a friendly and knowledgeable staff , and beautiful , well lit displays , this little gem will delight and round out any visit here !
