Visiting the castle and island is a great experience. It is only accessible through a guided tour. The tour is worthwhile. It is about 1.5-2 hours and provides a ton of history and stories about the island.

We took a trip to Bannerman's castle to hear an art lecture. I loved hiking up the hill and looking at the beautiful landscaping and castle ruins. What an awesome view of the mountains and Hudson River. The ferry ride over was relaxing.

No, it is owned by New York State but operated by a private trust. It is only available by private tour, it is $35. You can park at the beacon train station and take the ferry which is part of the tour.
