The First Natural Gas Lighthouse. Finished in 1829, the 40-foot tall Barcelona Lighthouse (Portland Harbor) was the very first natural gas lighthouse in the country. It was in Federal Lighthouse Service until 1859. At that time it became privately held through various owners until 2008, when New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation acquired it. Though it no longer has the original lens, nor is used for navigational purposes, it is still lit and visible today through an agreement with the Town of Westfield. The lighthouse is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The Keeper's cottage is open in a joint partnership with the Town of Westfield Visitor Center and a seasonal Wed-Sun docent with NYS Parks. The lighthouse itself is not open to public ascent due to structural issues at this time.

The historic lighthouse is well-preserved, but probably not worth more than 15 minutes of your time. The stairs are blocked off, so it's really only good for a couple of pictures. Head over to the adjacent harbor pier ... you can park your car and...More

Not much to see but a nice local stop. There are some artifacts, pictures of local Inns, taverns. If you have the chance to go into the old light house, it has a interesting stone wall configuration. It does need some professional repair help. The...More

You can step inside and see how the lighthouse was built but cannot climb it. The parking lot is very small but there is other parking at the marina. The lake is beautiful and very relaxing. If you like lighthouses, it is worth a stop...More

On our way to the Vinewood Sugar Shack and stopped in at the lighthouse. Great for a quick stop and photos. The living room of the lighthouse keeper’s house is a wonderful historic exhibit. The volunteers working were extremely friendly and helpful. Brochures are also...More

Really beautiful lighthouse, but you can't go up to the top. Nice place to stop and relax. The gas station employee across the way was very knowledagle, since the day we went the house was not open.

This nice little harbor is easily accessed if you are taking Route 5 between Erie and Buffalo. There are not a lot of scenic stops along this route, but this is one of them. There is plenty of free parking, and a good spot for...More

This beautiful lighthouse was built during the 1800's and is the first gas lit lighthouse in the world! It was built during a time when the Indians were not happy with the citizenry of the area. Made of stone its walls are thick and have...More

We stopped off the New York Thruway to get gas. As we sat at a stop light across the street from the gas station, we saw on our right a quaint lighthouse. After gassing up the car we went to explore. There is a nice...More
