Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Town is on the Turquoise Trail between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Was a coal mining town back in the day. Now it's an artist town with lots of shops and galleries. A must stop on the Turquoise Trail. Fun to spend some time going through the shops and of course spending some money. Also enjoy lunch here. Try the famous Green Chili Cheese burger at the Mine Shaft Tavern if you've never had a green chili cheese burger before. Big enough for 2. Visit the Turquoise Gem Workshop for a wonderful selection of pottery. Some from New Mexico of course, but also great selection of Mata Ortiz pottery from Mexico. Very nice people to deal with at the shop. Had no intention of buying more pots, but of course did. Definitely stop and spend some time in Madrid.

This is a very interesting town. It was still in early stages of opening up with the covid thing but lots of neat little shops and interesting people. Its a cool drive to get there too. We stayed in Santa Fe and went there a few times on our visit,

The description is incorrect because this is not a ghost town. We had fun in the town and glad we stopped. It was so different from our life in NYC and different in a good way.

Took the turquoise trail and stopped here to shop. Disappointing and merchandise is priced too high. There’s not much here, and shop owners were not willing to negotiate with customers. Would not come back.

We took the Turqoise trail on the way back from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. Thought we'd seen it all until we came across the delights found on this road. Madrid was especially cool! A bit tourist trappy but you can still feel the authenticity of a former hippy commune slightly gone commercial. Stopped for coffee and walked a little bit. Wish we would have had more time.

This town is a must go to during your stay in Albuquerque or Santa Fe New Mexico. It was recently featured on Sunday morning on CBS for the Christmas parade which is just a hoot. The little shops and galleries throughout the town are a must go into just to look around I find that the prices in Madrid are about half of what they are on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Take lots of pictures. To get that from Santa Fe it takes about an hour and I would suggest you spend at least 2 or 3 hours in Madrid perhaps have lunch and or a coffee

This is definitely NOT a ghost town! It is a fun little town with a number of fun and unique shops. We spend a couple of hours here. This is a great stop along the Turquoise Trail.

There’s not much to do or see, unless you like beer. There’s 4 restaurants, a great chocolate shop, ice cream shop, a photo parks, and coal mine museum. It’s quaint, but not memorable.

The Texans will understand what I mean that Madrid is more Terlingua than Fredericksburg. Many cool galleries, very funky.

We left ABQ and arrived in Madrid around 9:30. Shops were just starting to open and we parked with no issues. Parking is tight and more folks showed up as we were leaving. Get there early especially during the balloon festival.
