Fantastic Birdlife including Red Ibises
Feb. 2020 • Friends
The Bigi Pan salt water lake in western Suriname harbours fantastic wildlife, in particular a large number of birds. Buzzards, vultures, pelicans, storks, kingfishers and in particular the red Ibises and Flamingos which add a lot of color. There are several lodges on the water you can stay at, such as Akira (a new luxury resort), Mandje and Stephanie’s Eco lodge, a simple but very pleasant place where we stayed. Warmly recommended- a number of tour operators in Paramaribo offer round trips.

Many birds boat trip Jamaer Kanaal, red ibis on the lake
Nov. 2019
Best part was the boat trip to Bigi Pan on the Jamaer Kanaal and the way back. We saw Yellow Oriole, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Great Black Hawk, Black-collared Hawk, Egrets, Cocoi Heron, Yellow-headed Caracara, Groove-billed Ani and close by the lake the Red Ibis. On the way back we did saw a Southern Tamandua.

On the lake are several lodges in the water. We did stay at Tante Gerda's Lodge and did sleep in a hammock with mosquito net (beds also possible). This place was and the food was basic but fine enough.
After arrival we did a boat trip on the lake till sunset. We did saw pelicans, flying fishes and many red ibises.

The sunrise was great. After breakfast there were not activities before going back.

I consider Bigi Pan one of the best part of our 26 days Suriname trip.

Very nice boat tour in this bird-reservation
Sep. 2019
This is an nice and good oppertunity to see a lot of birds in this nature reservation. If you stay for 2 nights in Nieuw-Nickerie in a hotel (for instance Concord hotel) you can do the tour at daytime. The lodge on the water is poor, when taking a 2-day tour). It depends on what you want: Maybe you have a romantic idea on lying in a Hammock for a for hours and sleeping directly in the lodge on the lake, then a 2-day-tour will be okay

Simple but friendly and interesting
Jul. 2019
The rooms here are really simple and noisy because there are no ceilings. Not much facilities, but this is all compensated by the friendly staff, the great tours they offer and the tasty food they serve

Amazing birds, great food, friendly family run place
Feb. 2019
We loved our stay at Stephanie's. Definitely try to stay 2 nights. The drive is long from Parimaribo and so relaxing to stay 2 nights. Stephanie will help to arrange the transport from Parimarbo.

Guides didn't seem to know much about birds we saw
Apr. 2018
Booked a half day trip through Residence Inn with Albatross Tours. Managed to tag along with a Dutch group that had already booked the tour. Guides spoke very little English. They did slow down so we could view raptors perched along the canal (being dredged as we passed) leading to Bigi Pan (which is a large, extremely shallow open water swamp surrounded by mangroves). There were a lot of herons and egrets but no Ibis. Some flamingos along the shore of Bigi Pan, but couldn't get very close. The tour included a stop at one of the many buildings on stilts built in the reserve (apparently every tour company has been allowed to build its own). A lukewarm lunch was provided of chicken and rice brought from Nickerie in styrofoam containers that morning. The reserve is so shallow that mud was stirred up from the bottom by the outboard motors. Makes me wonder how much this damages the ecosystem, not to mention the numerous buildings allowed in the reserve.

The flora and fauna trip
Jan. 2018 • Friends
A trip through the swamp to see the flora and the fauna. Very nice birds all around, we also saw the red Ibis and the white and darkblue Heron. In the middle of the lake you can stay for one or two nights, but very primitive!
