About
The USS Liberty Wreck is the most famous dive site in Bali. It is also one of the best sunken ship wrecks in the world! If you come to Bali, you absolutely have to dive there The liberty ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo then was beached near Tulamben. In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung caused the vessel to slip off the beach, and it now lies on a sand slope in 9 to 30 m of water. The wreck is about 130 m long with the shallowest part at about 5 m deep and the deepest on the other side of the wreck at about 30 m deep.

One of the best site to dive undersea and enjoy the sight of active marine life. The dive goes around a Ship Wreck which was then the US Army Cargo shop torpedoed by Japanese Submarine. One of the best place to see corals, colorful fishes and get haunted from the deep blue beneath.

This is a must dive while in Bali. Very rare opportunity to see schools of fish, sharks, barracudas, 4kg Groupers, giant parrot fish, so many varieties of live coral. Great experience, not to be missed

I did a couple of dives here with Diving Candidasa, and could not have asked for a better location for my first wreck dive. With a shore entry, it makes for a easy beginning to the dive, and the abundance of wildlife visible around the wreck was astonishing (including turtles, trigger fish and seahorses to name a few) . The current can be a little bit daunting and does dictate where you can go at different points in the day, but even for a relatively inexperienced diver such as myself it was easy enough to adjust as necessary.
A spectacular location that should be on anyone's radar if they're wanting to dive in Bali.

We dove the USS LIberty wreck with Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort and had 4 dives. 2 dives were the wreck, two others were down the beach with other artifacts that have been pushed into the ocean. Each dive was completely amazing! The ecosystem was fantastic, and every dive had new and beautiful views of either the wreck or other statues or coral reef. The dive has nearly no current, and great visibility, and great dives for every time of day!
We dove with normal air and bottom times were around 45 minutes each. Max depth of the wreck is around 85-90 feet.

It was our first time diving in Asia and we loved it. It is a shore diving, no need for a boat. The diving itself is on a bottom of back volcanic sand and rubbles. The wreck of the USAT Liverty is filled with overgrown life and corals. Fishes and nudibranchs are everywhere.. We dove it several times, including (really) early morning and night dive. We recommand doing both, since you see different fishes which are hidding during the day.

I've dived the Liberty wreck several times - it's a great spot with a good combination of wide angle and macro. The resident school of bumphead parrotfish is amazing!

I have done approx. 20 dives on the USS Liberty over a period of 3 years and have loved each one particularly the night dives. Although the site is dived at by many there is always something new to see.

Revisiting Australia’s favorite- Bali. Unfortunately cancelled Lombok due to the tremors lost 80 percent of our air fare.
Stayed at a local Tulamben dive hotel with a private pool. The Bali dive resort and spa very conveniently located to the USS liberty dive site. Used the ATM BRI unit Kubu located outside the bank but not associated to it. Didn’t give me any money when I used my Visa card. Last dived the librerty 30 years ago. Bali is still a great place to dive even if it cost both of us $30.00 each for over staying one day on our 1 month visa.
Stayed at the Nagurah Rai hotel literally in the airport. Check out and walk through a door into the airport. Taught my son to dive in Tulamben 30 years ago still a great place.

Yes,it is very imporant to be a good swimmer. You just have to feel confortable in the water and you also need some skills as taking off the mask or floating the mask, so if you are not a good swimmer you just feel insecure.
Hi, I want to know if this dive site is safe now with the last frequent eruptions of the Agung. We will be in Amed next week and we would like to dive there. Thanks

Is this location a year round dive site? I am scheduled to travel to Bali 30 DEC, 2018 - 2 Jan, 2019. I am currently PADI Open Water and Advanced Certified, would those certifications work? I am interested in doing either an afternoon dive or a possible night dive on the 30th. Is this possible? If so what is the water temp and what gear is required or recommended, I have only dived in Guam and Okinawa Islands, And normally do not wear a wet suit, would like to know if I would need to bring my 3MM wet suit. What equipment do you rent, I currently have everything but a regulator but trying to decide if I should bring my own equipment or rent.

All three above have answered about the year round thing- thermal protection is a personal thing. I wore a 3mm shortie but then I get cold and was fine whereas others were diving in shorts and rash vest.
What I would echo though is the site is no longer as stunning as you may imagine. It’s good, but can be massively crowded and viz can be degraded by the surf.
As far as gear, I brought my own, but in hindsight would have been better to rent. I don’t have a fancy rig so could have saved weight and had an easier trip for not much extra - gear rental is cheap and gear where we dives (Bali Reef Divers) was good.
My only other worry about your trip is the time it will take to get to and from Tulamben. You say your arriving on the 30th and leaving on the 2nd, which only gives a two day window to dive. Assuming you are flying in the airport is probably 4 hours+ from Tulamben, longer if traffic is bad. If you’re staying in the south lots of dive shops offer Liberty trips but leave early doors and get back late so you’ll spend the best part on the day on the road for two dives. Might be worth looking into diving of Lembongan - given you are AOW and it’s much closer - 40 minutes by boat from Sanur

Is is possible to acces the USS liberty without dive guide? As we are advanced certified divers, we would really like to try to explore the dive site by ourselves!

Hi Nadine, Yes you can dive it without a guide...we do it often. My only reservation would be you will miss so much if you are only there for a short time...how long spending there?? My advice would be use a guide on your first dive for orientation and finding where most sea life is and then go back in on your own. Are you underwater photographers and what do you usually like to photograph?? We use Matahari Dive Resort at Tulamben and they will arrange for the porters to carry your cylinder to the site for you. The wreck varies from about 5M deep to 30M. The eel garden on the top of the wreck is worth seeing.

Do one need to be a certified diver to dive here.
NotaPigsty
Munich, Germany20,514 contributions
Yes/No. If not certified then you will have to do a "Try dive/Discover Scuba" course. This is an all day affair and involves some theory and pool work before diving. You will then dive with an instructor to a max 12m. The instructor will be controlling you. The wreck is only at 9m at closest point to the beach.
Much also depends on where you are staying. If staying in Tulamben then easy. If trying to do this as a day trip from the "south" then it takes 3hrs just to drive to Tulamben so you will need to allocate more time/check with dive centre in the south.

I am going to Tulamben in March and dive operator refused to provide night dives on claims that there are curfews due to volcanic eruption. Will appreciate some feedback and verification. Thank you!

Tulamben was completely evacuated when the first activity started. All diving activities ceased. People I know (regular visitors to Tulamben) had to leave. The dive centre I dive with in Amed do night dives on the Liberty and these ceased. As said no dive centre will stop without reason.

Hi there!!! I have no prior diving experience although i am planning of getting the padi open water diver course done... i am visiting bali in april... can I dive and see the shipwreck and other surrounding sites without being a certified scuba diveR? also what would be the added advantages of being a certified scuba diver?

I dove with a lady who learned to dive at the Liberty Wreck. It is very much a Scuba Diver's park and has all the facilities for obtaining your PADI card. The open water work would be diving on the U.S.A.T. Liberty Wreck. So, you would probably get to dive on it within a day's pool work if you did the on-line book work prior to arriving. The Liberty is a very shallow dive for vibrant coral and diverse marine life. Many people are learning to dive there at once. I would contact All 4 Diving Indonesia about obtaining your PADI card while there and doing your checkout dives at the Liberty Wreck. A very easy and calm place to dive with world class coral and marine life.

Do NOT try scuba diving if you can not swim!
You will put other people life at risk if you do so
This said, DO take swimming lessons and start by snorkeling
