An amazing cooking experience
Jan. 2020 • Couples
The chef and his team provided a fantastic experience while teaching us the basics of Balinese cooking. The menu was well thought out and was something we could make ourselves once we got back home. Kudos to the team for a great experience!

A fun way to learn about foods
Oct. 2019 • Couples
We thought we’d try something different this trip that would help us learn about the foods of Bali beyond merely tasting them so we checked out a cooking class at the Amala (without a market visit). It was a fun morning/afternoon.

The class was well organized and structured. We went over all the ingredients and spices we would be using and then started getting our lunch ready! We first learned the chili paste used I’n much of the local cuisine, the base gede. The step by step instructions (with a written guide) made our experience a learning one that resulted in our preparing lewar salad (long bean salad), tum ikan ( steamed fish in banana leaf), and dadar gulung (coconut pancake with palm sugar and coconut splits). Our chef was quite knowledgeable and made sure we were active participants in the cooking.

A fun time and a good meal!

Wayan was a great teacher.
Oct. 2019 • Friends
Four of us attended a cooking class at the Amala, the hotel grounds are stunning and the ambient music ensured that we relaxed immediately as soon as we arrived. There is max 8 people per class but no one else had booked on for the 4pm slot so we had the class to ourselves. Wayan was a great host and answered any questions we had. We spent about two hours watching Wayan prepare the food and we occasionally helped by chopping and stirring while we were cooking. Once we’d finished the food was plated up by an assistant and served to us a table that was right next to the spa pool at the hotel. It was a truly because setting I couldn’t recommend more.

Upscale cooking class
Oct. 2019 • Couples
We lucked out and got a private cooking class to ourselves! Because of that, we got to ask more questions and get more detailed answers. The staff was very friendly and professional. The chef spoke English very well and would often give us alternatives for ingredients found in the USA. The class was prepared beautifully and plated nicely for our private meal. I think left overs were given to staff which I am grateful they didn’t go to waste! We did get bitten by many mosquitoes despite all the sprays and fans in the area but I don’t think that’s the hotel’s fault. Beautiful and calm atmosphere.

Delicious and informative
Sep. 2019 • Couples
We took a cooking class including market excursion with Gede and were really impressed! At the market we learned about many different types of fish, vegetables, and fruits. We were the only two joining the class for the day, so it was an intimate experience. The cooking itself was also really fun, and we learned so much about Balinese cuisine. Not to mention the fact that the finished product was delicious! I highly recommend this class.

An Excellent Experience
Sep. 2019 • Solo
I booked thru Viator, and chose the morning session with market visit. It turned out to be a private event because the folks who had booked for the session had changed to the afternoon.

Chef Christ Sasmito and car met me at my hotel right on time at 8:45, and we took off for Jimbaran fish market, 30 min away thru traffic that seemed saner than usual, but maybe I'm just acclimating.
The market supplies most of Denpasar's fish and seafood to everyone from big hotels and restaurants to the private consumer, of whom we saw quite a few buying just one fish. Surprisingly, it had virtually no smell on this day. I'm a market afficionado, and I loved the place.
A nice yellowtail in hand, we went to the Amala Hotel where the classes are held

The hotel has set up a demonstration kitchen, with adjacent dining area and lounge, all open to very nice grounds.

Following the menu, we chopped, ground, mixed, moulded and fried to make Green Papaya Soup with Seafood; Balinese Chicken Sate on Lemongrass Sticks; and Banana Fritters. Chef Christ's friendly personality and good English made this fun. Chef's pointers on what can substitute for ingredients hard to find at home were particularly useful.
Not surprisingly, the meal was delicious, and prettied up by an assistant, looked very professional.
I recommend this experience highly.

Great fun
Aug. 2019 • Couples
Great day out learning about Balinese food and how to prepare classic dishes. Chef Gede was great at explaining everything and answering questions we had. The market trip was an insightful part where we were able to see the vast varieties of fish on offer. Expect quite a feast at the end of the class which always tastes better as you put in the hard work. All in all a nice activity to do in Bali if you’re looking for a cultural experience.

Balinese cooking class at the Amala
Aug. 2019 • Friends
Had the absolute best time cooking traditional Balinese cuisine. Gede was so lovely, friendly and informative with so much of experience in being a chef. I would highly recommend this class for anyone wanting to do it, the setting at the Amala was just divine as a backdrop near the outdoor kitchen area. We got to keep our aprons and got a certificate of completion as a keepsake. Thanks again for a wonderful day.
