The tram leaves the town centre of Franschhoek and heads directly to the first winery. From the route and times of pick up/drop off you choose which ones you want to visit. You can go to as many or as few wineries as you choose. It is not a guided tour in a group, they purely provide the transport. You tend to be at a winery for about an hour. No need to book the general wine tastings - the winery staff are expecting you. If you look into each winery on the Wine Tram website, it will tell you if they have more specialised wine tastings, which need to be booked - there are a couple that do chocolate pairings for example.
For your information, you meet at the Wine Tram Office, which is directly in the town centre, easy to find. There are a couple of cafes next to it. You start he journey on a bus, which is designed to look like a tram and the trip is on a mix of bus and tram. It is very good fun. Each winery we went to charged a small fee for the wine tastings, about 20 ZAR, but it is decent size tastings!
Anything else, just ask!
