We were looking for something to do on a sunday (2 kids, ages 4 and 6) and stumbled upon this mining museum. It was a beautiful drive up and when we arrived we weren't sure what to expect. The girls loved the first part of the tour and the scavenger hunt really engages. The actual mine tour is so so... More

Loved our visit to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. Who knew they mined that much Zinc in New Jersey! Absolutely wonderful tour guide, Ray. Funny, personable, knowledgeable, informative - really made it all come alive for us. So much to see that one visit can't cover it all. A fascinating mine tour - a great museum. Young and old alike... More

Spent about 1/2 a day there. Went early to "mine" for our own rocks. My kids are 8 and 10 so we could only go in an open area called the "Dump". Also, went on a tour, bring a sweater and wear closed toes shoes. Gift shop has a lot and not too pricey. I got myself a really cute... More

I was not sure how a 2 hour tour was going to go over with my 7 & 5 year children. I should not have worried....they had a blast!!! We started the tour off in the exhibit hall that houses their vast collection of minerals.....the children participated in the scavenger hunt, which kept them engaged. We then ventured with our... My sister & I saw their booth at the Raritan Center Gem Expo in Edison, NJ & were so interested by their specimens! My sister recently asked if I wanted to go to the mine w/ her (she had to remind me that we saw their booth at the expo) & I'm so glad I went! The tour was very... More

We went to the Franklin Mineral Museum last year and learned about this mine. Overall, it was a very nice day. We came during the week, so not all of the activities were open, as they are on the weekends, when there are more visitors. We went on the dig and my daughter found several rocks she liked. Then we... More

We end up here at least once a year and my kids always enjoy it. They think getting to go into a real (dark) mine is exciting. The love seeing the florescent rocks. The love all the different stuff in the museum... Fossils, large rocks, the cool periodic table, old equipment, etc... Now they always want to go slushing for... More

Family enjoyed the visit which included a scavenger hunt in the museum before the guided tour inside the former production mine. The ore is fluorescent and black lights display the beauty. The rock collection activity at the end of the tour is another innovative way to keep the kids involved (and get trinkets). Recommend a stop reasonable distance from NYC,... More
