Overview

Originally named Elephant Bazaar, this six-story elephant-shaped building was built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty, Jr. in hopes of selling parcels of land located on the beach in Margate, New Jersey. Over the years, this unique structure has served many purposes -- most notably as a tourist attraction. Today, Lucy the Elephant is recognized as the Oldest Roadside Attraction in the United States and has been declared a National Historic Landmark. Guided Tours through the elephant structure occur every half-hour during business hours, with the last tour of the day beginning 30 minutes prior to closing. And don't forget to shop our Gift Shop for all of your elephant-themed items, including one-of-a-kind Lucy the Elephant souvenirs available nowhere else!

This is a short but fun stop. The staff were all friendly and witty. We laughed for most of the 45 minutes we were there. This was from enjoying the circumstances and company; not at the kitschy attraction. Lucy herself has a certain elegance and...More

Being in the area we made it a point to see this attraction. We were fortunate to go when there was only a short line and we waited only 10 minutes or so. The inside was interesting, but very very very small. Do not go...More

This was a fun trip to a local Icon. The history of house Lucy was first built, allowed to deteriorate, and rebuilt again is fascinating. Withstanding so many Hurricanes....Lucy is tough! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The views of the beach from Lucy...More

We did enjoy this. We saw the story in mystery at the museum. It was a nice tour. The only problem was you have one hour before you have to leave. I understand with the parking but felt a little rushed

Great views of Margate and the beach from the top of the elephant. Search Groupon for discounts. Not worth it if you're paying full price. There was a mini carnival today as it was the anniversary of the monument otherwise, there would be nothing to...More

Fun historic landmark. There is free parking set aside specifically for Lucy that is limited to an hour, but an hour isn’t needed. The grounds includes picnic tables. There’s a gift shop, with a friendly and pleasant staff. This is a good place to visit...More

Very interesting historical site. The tour guides along with the video and picture boards are full of information about Lucy and her story. Was very well done and a nice visit for the family. Check the beach books for coupons
