Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Music Hall charges $6 extra to sell a ticket on-line (even in this Covid compromised era). I bought two tickets for a performance by the Boston Camerata. That performance was cancelled and the Music Hall has decided to keep my $12, which I paid for an even that they are now not holding. Why are they being cheap skates?

The music was a trio playing Flamenco guitar, bass and percussion instruments. I will review the venue and not the music as musical performances are of a personal taste. The venue was small, seating about 100. The staff warmly treated us and we felt quite at “home”. They have a well stocked bar and some snack foods available. The acoustics were terrific and lighting was adequate too. My only issue is with the low backed seats, as I am tall and have a long torso. The seat back hit in an uncomfortable spot and did not adequately support my back for comfort. Overall though it is worth going to an event there as the ticket price for my event was reasonable and it provided enjoyable entertainment on a cold winter’s eve!

I had tickets for a show that was cancelled. I was offered a refund but once processed I received $18 less than the total order amount. I was told because the tickets were ordered online I wouldn’t receive the $6 fee for each ticket even though the event was cancelled. I’ve had many events cancelled during the pandemic at other local theaters and have always received the full ticket price and associated fees back. I would understand a partial refund if I was the one cancelling the order but not when it’s not the patrons fault. Very disappointed. I’ve always enjoyed the Music Hall and the countless shows I’ve attended there over the years. I will enjoy my time at other local theaters next time.

We’ve been coming here annually to see Chris Botti. It’s our winter escape. No words can describe the entertainment that Chris Botti and his band are capable of. So much fun! Romantic and lovely. The theatre is a treasure. Staff are friendly and helpful. Great acoustics! Restaurants in town are all the highest caliber. Always a wonderful few days stay!

Beautiful venue to catch a show. The acoustics are spectacular; you can hear the performer clearly, no matter where you are seated. The older architecture is stunning and the bathrooms are the cleanest and most elaborate design I have ever seen.

Make sure to show up at least half an hour before any performance. Checking tickets was tedious and caused a backup in the bar area.

We attended the Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway concert at this venue and it was beautiful. The old style decor was as great as the show. I like the lounge on the lower floor. You can tell that the staff and volunteers are proud of that place.

This was my first time to visit "The Music Hall" in Portsmouth. I have been to Portsmouth many, many times and never knew this beautiful little theatre existed.

If you see any show listed that will be at this location, I would encourage you to pick this location. It is located in beautiful downtown Portsmouth which is rich with history. Many wonderful things to see and do in the area.

Give it a try.. You will not be disappointed!

So disappointed that the performance we wanted to see was ruined by inaudible sound and non-functional air conditioning.

In brief, it became obvious in the pre-performance announcements that the sound system was not working in our section of the audience. I immediately let the usher and house manager know, and a bit later told the ticket office even more emphatically. A technician did manage to get one speaker functioning after 50 minutes, but it did not make the remainder of the performance any more intelligible. The performance was entirely spoken-word, but we estimate we heard only 60 to 75%. Three people around me complained of the same thing. No followup happened to ask if sound had improved or to offer alternatives.

There was also no air conditioning, and the artists and audience were suffering. I don't know if this is by design to preserve the historical building, but to offer full-price tickets at a performance venue without clear warnings of the lack of AC is not acceptable in 2014.

We were so excited to go here. It's a lovely historical building -- especially the lobby -- and the performer was someone we very much enjoy. It's so sad that careless management and/or inadequate systems ruined their one chance to make us frequent visitors.

I purchased 7 tickets to White Christmas in October. This was to be the centerpiece of a 3-generation family holiday weekend away. I happened to go to the Music Hall website while driving to New Hampshire and saw that the show had been canceled literally 2 days after I had purchased my tickets. I could not find an email notifying me of a cancellation in any of my email folders, and my $625 had not been refunded. When I called the box office I was told that an email had gone out and that I had missed the deadline for receiving a refund! Then I was told that they would make a 1-time exception in crediting me back the money! Like it was a big favor! Our weekend was essentially ruined. Fortunately our hotel allowed us to cancel; so we turned around and went home. If the venue had made more of an effort upon cancellation — phone call? a refund? another email? — we could have made other weekend plans. Not at all happy.
