My wife and I never looked for turquoise before. We did dig for topaz in rock tailing piles before, and knew it would be hard work to scramble over loose rocks and boulders. That said, our initial experience was doubtful because unlike topaz, you are not sure what colored rocks have any quality turquoise. After getting home, and some rough cutting... More

If you love turquoise this is the place to go! Office is located across the street on the north west corner from the Mizpah hotel. You need to go there to arrange a tour of the mine. At $100.00 per person when we were there seemed high, but you keep all the turquoise you find already dug-up. They will even... More

A great way to spend a day--three hours searching for Turquoise in the tailings of a mine on the side of a mountain with a great view. We filled our bags and had the opportunity to watch the workings of the mine. When you return to the shop they polish a couple of pieces from your find. We came away... More

Thank you Otteson's and Greg Fink for a great day out in the middle of nowhere. You drive past this huge Solar Reserve site, then up into the mountain to the mine. We brought our own tools, knee pads, hats, sun block, water and buckets. The format is simple - go out to a hole in the ground and look... More

I certainly would not put this on my Bucket list but it was interesting. Good examples of turquoise are very I mean very hard to find. For two hundred dollars we could have purchased a nice piece. The guide Kyle was very nice.

My boyfriend and I went to Tonopah in June 2014. It was a trip that we had planned all year long and we were so excited. We went on the mining tour and had a blast. Every member of theOtteson family are the best people I have ever met. We had so much fun in 2014 we went back this... More

What great fun - Don't miss it...though it initially seems quite expensive at $100 each. But for what you get - no problem. Saw this one praised by TA readers, and thought this sounded like a great opportunity to gain some hard earned 'brownie' points from my wife - if she was to find some turquoise herself for some pieces... This turned out to be the highlight of our trip to Death Valley. After enjoying the beauty of the National Park, a stop was made in Tonapah. Our main reason was the opportunity to mine turquoise. A discount was given on your mining tour if you stayed at the Mizpah Hotel. Our stay at the hotel was very comfortable and... More

What a great way to spend to the day! After searching for a way to mine for my own turquoise, this was the only place I found- and what a great experience (even though we had to travel down Extraterrestrial Highway to get there!) The tours are held out of the Mizpah Hotel on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It costs $100... More

If you love authentic turquoise & would love to find some for yourself from a world famous mine than this is a must do! I made the trip as a birthday present to myself & if you stay in the Mizpah Hotel, you get a discount! You meet at the Otteson's jewelry store inside the Mizpah Hotel, take care of... More
