This is not your average tourist activity. There is hill where mining tailings have been dumped so you can hunt among the rocks or dig up some bigger rocks to find the garnets imbedded in the Rhyolite. When you find one by seeing the facets...More

Having read others reviews and even a blog about this place, I had decided that I would utilize the "Visual Hunt" method. The weather was warm and I am afraid of rattlers so no rock-turning over for me! At first I only picked up small...More

It took me about 20 minutes from downtown Ely to get to the parking area at the top in a small rental car. I spent about 2 hours and found about 15 small garnets by searching the ground surface. I wasn't expecting much, so am...More

Okay, first I want to say, the address on this location is WRONG! Go towards Ruth and just a bit after that turn off there is a sign for garnet hill. It is going to see like more than three miles but you have to...More

We brought hammers, a chisel, protective eyeglasses, gloves, a couple of buckets and lots of water. We had some success finding garnets in the rocks, but it was hard work breaking them open. We had the most fun simply looking around, finding them lying in...More

Once you reach the very top of the mountain and travel into the wooded area. Continue to look down in the dirt, because you could have garnet in front of you. I found several around the picnic area I was very surprised about that because...More

Bring a hammer and eye proactive gear. For a dirt road the road was maintained well. Steep at times and a little tight in some spots. Lots of picnic areas. Bring a hammer. You have to carefully wack the rocks. I found 3 or 4...More

Not at the hill, itself. You might try to see if there is a hardware store in town. We brought our own hammer and gloves but ended up just finding ones exposed and loose on the ground.
