Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Small not much to see so we started watching the video about Earthquake Lake. About 3/4 of the way through, a rude employee walked in front of us stud in front of the TV and took the DVD out. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, changing the video. When I told him we had already invested about 20 min into it and we would like to watch until the end, he had no response. The videos where the only worth while thing there. Do not waste your time or money here.

Sept 2022
*Disclaimer-we stayed in July 2022, but I kept getting busy with life and kids and kept forgetting to review, but they deserve the good review. Marked as Sept 2022, but we were there in July.

We had some time to kill in West Yellowstone so we decided to check out the museum. The staff was very kind and helpful. We loved seeing the stagecoach history and the movie about the fire was good for the kids to see, as our guide on our tours referenced it a lot. We really enjoyed the museum. It is small and it won't take too long to walk through, but it is definitely worth a visit. Oh, and in the summer months, it is a wonderful place full of air conditioning!

This museum is located inside the old railroad depot. It features the history of the railroad and the area. There are many interesting displays and is worth a look if you are in West Yellowstone. Just outside the museum, you can see Montana's Centennial Train.

Old train stations are just neat anyway, but the displays were nicely done. Focused on the history of transportation and wildfire in the area. Down the hall in the “theater” area where a movie runs on a loop, there’s a great play space for children. There were ikea toys like wooden trucks, a tepee, and felt s’mores stuff. Also a table with butcher paper down for art. Really saved us when we were hailed out of our plans to go to the Grizzly and Wolf Center.

Entrance is good for the next day, too, and souvenir shop includes some things you won’t see in the park.

Very disappointing « museum ». Not much to see inside (a few interesting pieces) and a very white washed history….as if it started when the white man came. Almost nothing about the first nations that lived in the area for thousands of years. A lot of emphasis on the 1988 fire and the stage coaches, not much else. Not worth the $10 per person.

It is a very bad so called museum as there is nothing in display inside about the original people of the land but only the late arrivals. Saddened to see this place.

Even though there is a sign that clearly states masks are required, one employee and several visitors were not wearing masks. It looked like a nice place but we did not feel safe and left after only a short visit.

I am sorry you had this experience and sorry that we are just now seeing and responding to your review. I want to ensure future visitors that our organization has taken COVID-19 seriously. We do not want anyone to feel unsafe while visiting the Museum. We began requiring masks before any state or local mandates required us to and I am surprised and disappointed to hear an employee was seen not wearing a mask. We did have trouble with visitors removing masks once they were no longer in view of staff. Within a week of your review, we closed to the public and shifted to by-appointment-only visits in an effort to keep staff and visitors safe. We reopened to the public this past Saturday (May 8, 2021) and are requiring masks. Again, I apologize for the experience you had while visiting the Museum. We appreciate your feedback and will do our absolute best to ensure future visitors do not feel unsafe.

While in size and scope it doesn't compare to the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum--here in West Yellowstone it stands out as the one attraction that isn't a gift shop or restaurant. We spent some portion of a Thursday night (hours are from 11AM -7PM during the week) and Friday afternoon there; time well spent. For seniors, a $5 ticket allows 2 day access--may not need both days if you have at least an hour to spend there--we didn't, thus the 2 day visit. The museum tells the story of what it was like to tour Yellowstone in the beginning around the turn of the last century. They also feature a display on the arrival of passengers by train and then their access to the park for a tour by stage coach. It was fun and insightful to visit.

While visiting Yellowstone we decided to visit the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum. Staff members were very nice, interactive, and kept the facility in great shape. The information was interactive, displayed nicely, informative, with unexpected history stories. The building is old but that one of the great things about the museum. The museum is small but packed with lots of information.

At the Yellowstone Historic Center has bunch of train artifacts from the old days of trains that come through Yellowstone National Park. They have three stage coaches on display next to the front door of the entrance and exit door. Also there is a fee to enter the establishment which is not bad. Once you get in you'll see some artifacts from the conductors and operators of the trains that came through. Also some clothing display and items from what was use on the trains and etc. Also they do have a theater inside which has some seating as well. If you want to learn about the historic trains come here.
